Funny how many of our players have gone on to sign up for Cardiff or Swansea, Reid,Pack, Flint, Tomlin and now Smith, all from that 2016 team.

Suppose its easy enough to dash down the M4. Especially now they dont have to pay to cross the bridge.

I never thought he had the ability to be our go to guy in the scoring department. His shot scoring percentages are poor and he misses way too many chances for me to be in favour of him staying but having said that he was still our top scorer but way below the levels at other teams. If you truly want to challenge for the top then you need many more players getting the ball in the net to give us a well rounded scoring line-up.

Message from Wayne Gretzky: You will miss 100% of the shots you don't take - and he sure knew how to score.

WELCOME WILLIAMS - MIDFIELDER ARRIVES IN BS3
    THURSDAY, AUGUST 20TH 2020

Bristol City can confirm the signing of Joe Williams from Wigan Athletic on a four-year contract.

The 23-year-old central midfielder is Dean Holden's first signing - as they prepare for the upcoming 2020/21 season - and joins for an undisclosed fee.

Williams was pictured around Ashton Gate wearing the purple and lime away kit for the 2020/21 campaign - designed in conjunction with the club's new technical partner hummel - featuring the club's new front of shirt sponsor MansionBet.

City Chief Executive Officer Mark Ashton said: “We are thrilled to welcome Joe as our first signing of the transfer window. Joe is young, but he has Championship experience and he impressed us during the time we watched him at both Bolton and Wigan.

City Head Coach Dean Holden said: “Joe is going to form a big part of our squad and so I’m delighted to have this opportunity to work with him, especially as we fought off competition from a number of big clubs.

“Joe is a quality passer of the ball, he is physical too and he has a winning mentality that is so important.”

Williams, who can be deployed as a defensive midfielder, came through the Everton youth setup where he played alongside now City teammate Liam Walsh, before making his Championship debut while on season-long loan at Barnsley in 2017/18. He gained further second-tier experience by spending the 2018/19 campaign on loan at Bolton Wanderers, before he moved to Wigan in a permanent switch from Everton last summer.

He has one England youth cap, having represented the England Under-20s in 2016.

    2019/20 Championship stats (*Transfermarkt):

    • Appearances: 38
    • Minutes played: 3010
    • Goals: 1
    • Assists: 4
    • Average passes per game: 38.9
    • Pass completion rate: 81.2%
    • Tackles: 70
    • Interceptions: 27

Tough tackling likes a sliding tackle midfielder. Played alongside Walsh in the Everton youth team

A figure of £2m is being mentioned, a bargain it seems, feel some sympathy for Wigan though.

Think they had a 2.5 million release clause.
We was after him in 2019 but he broke or damaged his leg at the time so we pulled out.

I think they may have gone already! … KS to Swansea!.. just hope he stays fit and doesn't break a leg! should Leeds and WBA been interested may have seen the light and not wanted to be on the bench / forgotten in the squad!
