The period of play yesterday where Anderson had Kohli completely tied down at one end, whilst Stokes was ripping it up at the end was superb Test cricket. There have been two positions in this game where India were totally on the ropes - England at 216-3 before Root's run-out, and India at 169-6 yesterday. Kohli has single-handedly kept them in the match. I still fancy England to win this game, but they will need to bat properly today. A lead of 250 could make for a cracking finish.
You are describing England perfectly. At present they are a nearly team in tests and had they not missed Kohli early on would be the favourites that you seem to believe them to be.

England in several colours of **** at 85-5. Ashwin is a fantastic bowler and England's line up including 7 left handers is great for him. The ball is swinging and seaming a bit. Stokes now out, as usual. 86-6 at lunch. Only a blitz from Buttler can save England from humiliation.
Lack of application and technique from the England batsmen this morning........ Big ask now to get a lead of 200+ which would be the minimum requirement.......
