so they do take them seriously then? They play their first teams as they get later into the stage.

I've seen teams not play their first team in the CL group stages and use it for squad rotation (spuds did it last season, you've done it a few times).

Trophies will come as klopp continues to build this squad on the back off of CL qualification.

We’ve already signed Fabinho and Keita, and VVD will start the season so we’re going into the season stronger.

If we sign Fekir and an attacker plus either a RCB or GK, I think we will be immense.

If teams took them seriously they would play their A teams against the Aston Villas of the world in the middle stages rather than risk an upset. I think it's clear most top teams do not prioritise the domestic cups very highly.

Mid table and lower do because it means more income.

Fekir is expensive but may end up having to be the attacker.

    Wilson might get a chance.

I think while i agree with your positions we are going to have to unearth a couple of less expensive gems here to get the players.

GK is a must now. thers no excuse for that first goal. Matip got dropped for lovren for a silly error v west brom in FA cup. Surely after making a silly error (the silliest in history i think) in the biggest club game on the planet Karius must be dropped.

Sure, it's not prioritised as highly at time but that doesn't mean they don't take it seriously.

You have acknowledged yourself that they put the first team out as it gets closer to the finals.

Likewise, teams take Europy more seriously as you get to the latter end of the stages to the point they will play their weaker first 11 in the league.

That backs what I said though. League and CL are more important.

Of course clubs (and I would love an FA cup or League Cup) but it's really back burner compared to everything else.

If it was a serious goal big teams wouldn't risk playing their b team against the Villas, Fulhams, and West Hams of the world. Teams that arn't a major threat, but can cause a cupset. If it was a serious important goal they would play the A teams.

    its the opposite.

Top team go further in cups using quality squads while mid tbale and lower teams dump the cups asap. (like spurs do)

    Last 10 league cup winners

    2009 Manchester United
    2010 Manchester United
    2011 Birmingham City 2–1 Arsenal
    2012 Liverpool
    2013 Swansea City
    2014 Manchester City
    2015 Chelsea
    2016 Manchester City
    2017 Manchester United
    2018 Manchester City

(admittedly theres a couple blips in league cup but it is of lesser importance)

    Last 10 FA cup winners
    2008–09 Chelsea
    2009–10 Chelsea
    2010–11 Manchester City
    2011–12 Chelsea
    2012–13 Wigan Athletic
    2013–14 Arsenal
    2014–15 Arsenal
    2015–16 Manchester United
    2016–17 Arsenal
    2017–18 Chelsea

    Theres only one blip there.

    Big teams all the way.

Tell me again how big clubs like city and cheslea don't give a stuff?

The fact is the top team clean up. Liverpool have just been **** and are well over due trying a leg in these competitions.

I must ask out of 20 trophies i see cheslea won 5, arsenal 3, city 4, utd 4 and us 1... along with wigan, swansa and brum.

No spurs... why? focused on 4th place. how many times have the got 4th place in 10 years? 5.

Who thinks spurs are all that? nobody.

    Only big clubs win things.

    We need to win things.

look at the roll of honours:
    League cup:
    Liverpool 8
    Manchester United 5
    Aston Villa 5
    Chelsea 5
    Manchester City 5
    Tottenham Hotspur 4

    FA cup:
    Arsenal 13
    Manchester United 12 1
    Chelsea 8
    Tottenham Hotspur 8
    Liverpool 7
    Aston Villa 7

If you'd asked these in 2009 the table would be different. If you ask again in 2023 will LFC be further down the list again....

    LFC NEEDs to win things.

end of story. 4th is meaningless in the grand scheme.

It is fair to say every loss no matter what game it is in is unacceptable to cheslea, city, utd. doesn't matter who got sent out to play the game.

Teams that send out youths then shrug when they lose and then carry on regardless don't win things and then say the cups don't matter.

There is no way the league cup is that important at seasons end to city nor is it a sop to those who wanted the CL trophy and the quadruple but it is just a symptom of not accepting second best. City were "satisfied" just about with a league title but want the CL. they didn't rest for the league cup though... and it had nothing to do with their exit from CL either.

Nobody judges city by them having one more league cup on the trophy cabinet they are judged on spending on what they did verses their rivals in europe and england.. sure thats obvious. but winning is winning and its habit forming.

IMO had klopp won the league cup v city i think he'd have won the europa v seville. Its that simple.

You lot might remember you're a football team again next season - and that'll make the top tougher again.

The reality is is that City have so many good players that they have two teams that are as good or better than pretty much anyone else.

the standard circus came to the forefront this season. Roman is definitely a problem to it but conte didn't quite help himself. Not sure most managers would have stood for it but surely by now any manager coming in knows they have to work with roman and his cronies. Can't complain myself, Roman has transformed the club and whilst i don't think the recruitment was great, i don't think conte got the best out of the squad.

What happens next is anyones guess. I'm hoping it's the "up" cycle of our recent trend <laugh>

What year was Klopps last poor year at Dortmund. I do worry that as a squad, Klopp asks a lot. The years following a wc worry me for the squad. Definitely need a bit more quality on the bench with this year coming on the back of a tournament. Just so we can rotate a bit more confidently.

We need to win something just to get a winning mentality into the squad.

Most of madrid side has won 3/4 CL trophies each, not one of our players had and that experience in finals helps and gives you an air of confidence going in.

I agree with solid I think it was who said it’s all about the journey and the cup just tops it off. You’re right trophy doesn’t make you better fans but winning it is far more enjoyable, no lfc fan will ever forget Istanbul or the Fa cup final at millennium stadium in 06 because we won and we won memorably!

I also think it’s inportant for Klopp. He doesn’t have a great record in finals and for more than anything, winning something will get people off lfc and klopps back about not having won anything since whenever.

Lets be real, there are 4 trophies to win a season, 20 teams can win 1, and 92 can win another, 92 plus all non league win another and then the CL has 40odd in group stages?

more teams are going to not win something than win something so it’s not a failure not to win, but if you don’t win, then let’s make the games we do play memorable and enjoyable for the fans.

We lost the EL final a few years back, but everyone remembers the game v Dortmund and how amazing it was being a fan watching that.

To non lfc fans it’ll be forgotten but that doesn’t matter, because we will all remember it and the joy it brought us watching our team put on a show.

    Hamann makes strange comments TBH.

His accusation of ego to karius for crying was imo silly.

The reality of LFC is we need to look at ourselves as we are getting to finals on the back of anfield and every final we have gone to we have simply not turned up.

We have anfield to turn to in cups and especially two legged games and its getting us through but we are seeing consistently players not showing up.

At least this time we were in it til slaah went off and were 1-1 but we seriously surrendered initiative and for me thats damning.
