i really don't know how you can say that things aren't being addressed at this stage. there's still a month of the window to go! as i said, we probably won't have our ideal squad when the season kicks off and might not for the whole season if deals can't be done. are we not still trying to bring someone in that role and have we not been searching all summer?
Yes we've been searching, but should Toivonen not sign (or someone else tall and creative), what's plan B? We've known Ricky will likely be our main man since February, and if plan A is "Toivonen", then it currently seems like plan B is to play both Fer and Howson out of position to put someone tall in an advanced position. That's the best plan we've come up with in 6 months to make the most of Ricky? Whilst the window is open I'm happy to see us as a work in progress, but if we line up in October like we did in the first half last night, and play a similar style, then I'm going to be worried.
if the right player can't be brought in then we have no choice but to go with what we have - why bring in someone inferior?
There's no point buying rubbish, and looking for signings like Toivonen, Quagliarella, etc is exciting and an impressive show of ambition. However, should they not come off, then I'd accept a less impressive signing, if they allowed us to make the most of van Wolfswinkel and Fer, who are undoubtedly impressive signings. If we picked up a tall attacking midfielder, even if they aren't as good as Toivonen, then it allows Fer to drop deeper into his more natural role, and stops Ricky being used like a target man. The incoming player may be no better than Howson or Hoolahan, but if their attributes suit the rest of the starting eleven, it still improves the side.
have we even played a really strong line up yet in any match? even last night we had no ruddy who its fair to say has a very big effect on things
Last night first 45:
---------Bunn-------------
Whittaker-Martin-Turner-Olsson
-------Johnson-Howson------
Snodgrass----Fer-----Redmond
-------Van Wolfswinkel--------
Yes no Ruddy or Bassong, but I'd still expect potentially 8 of those players to be first choice next season. I can accept Turner and Johnson are shy of match-practice, but if Ruddy was the only change for the first match of the season, that's fairly near the best we can put out. For sure Ruddy brings a lot, even though (despite a couple of errors) I thought Bunn was ok last night and was much better at playing the ball out short than last season, but our failure to hold possession and create things in the middle of the park cannot be blamed on a goalkeeper.
he's still experimenting. has he tried hoolahan behind rvw?
Briefly, I think we saw it for 10 minutes last night, I can't speak for other games. And actually for that ten minutes it looked promising. But if we can't play out from the back (and during that ten minutes Bunn did kick a couple of goal kicks towards Wes and Snodgrass), then I can't see it working with the defence on show last night.
he's still giving game time to people to boost fitness levels. until we are a month into the season and the window has closed will we truly know if we still have those issues?
And pre-season is all about fitness and trying things, I'm happy to see it, particularly things like the wingers swapping flanks last night was good to see. And no, we've got a month to go, fine, but I'm still disappointed we'd rather play Fer as a pseudo-Toivonen than come up with a proper plan B should we not make any more signings.
