David Corner was selected because Shaun Elliott was injured / suspended.
That's how Barry Venna ended up being captain

Colin West bagged a couple of penna's in the semi final, but wasn't selected for the final - where we missed a pen.

I think Norwich were the weakest side we played in that Cup run. Crystal Palace, Forest, Watford, Spurs, Chelsea.....

It's funny as hell when they bring him out to do the draw at the SoL - truly scraping the bottom of the barrel with that one! (Sure he's done it twice now!)

Never seen John Byrne or Colin West or Shaun Elliott do the draw mind.

I remember this as the friendly cup final - got a ticket 2 days before game , stayed at brother in laws in Stevenage.Went to Stevenage station in red and white lab coat - station guard gave me escort to train as the WHU ,Millwall and Chelsea casuals were causing probs. Front of train was full of Norwich fans back was Sunderland - no trouble good banter. At King's Cross a little bother but both sets of fans calmed it . Good friendly banter up Wembley Way and after
Our Only One Gary Rowell song rendition was awesome - unlike the result (he played for them I think but was injured for the game ) - correct me if I'm wrong. Also think Shaun Elliot played .
Both teams were relegated but the friendly cup between the club's started the following year.

Sounds like a good day out then! So you know Stevenage? I had the dubious pleasure of living there for a while, and now just up the road.

The result spoilt an otherwise great football (fan) day - atmosphere electric and wembley beer way expensive £2.00 a pint then :emoticon-0149-no:
Know Stevenage it a bit as brother in law , a builder lives there - Canterbury Way now in Oaks Cross
A new town like Washington but without our mackem class :emoticon-0148-yes:

Yes. It was a tremendous loud rendition of the song. Can't remember wether he went to the Norwich end but remember him just in front of where I was, applauding and wearing a Sunderland scarf

    Normally a reliable Penalty taker.

Instead he became the first person to miss a penalty in a Wembley Cup Final.

When asked about this after the Game, Hartford's reply was something like, ----

'I'm claiming it cos I'm dam sure he wont be'

This Dave Watson started his career at Liverpool then moved to Norwich.
Not long after this Final he went to Everton and was with them for a long time.

My Son-in-Law went, only to discover his ticket was in the Norwich end, (heaven knows where he got it from).

By the second half he was out of ***s and asked the Norwich lad next to him if he had any to sell him.
'Hey lads this young Sunderland fellah's out of ***s, who's got spares'.

    He was showered in ***s.
They all looked after him, 'just in case'.

According to the MET this was the most peaceable final with the least trouble they could remember.

In passing, Steve Bruce played for Norwich that game not long before he moved to MU.

Another ingredient about the "friendly cup" between the two clubs was two of our fans shaking the NCFC's manager's hand when he was coming off Wembley and actually had the cup in his other hand.

I was down at Forest before we got them back up here. We gave them loads for Scabbing at the time, the police gave our lads a right old time.
Howard Gayle scored a belter in the replay.
