Some other memories from my 14 year old self; The pundit (Clough?)who suggested that Man U would win 3-4 nil and the commentator saying that they would all be embarrassed if we won. (They were) The cool way that Peter Rodriguez trapped a dangerous cross into the box just like it was a training session- he had joined Saints on a free transfer less than a year earlier I believe. The feeling of certainty that Man U would not equalise after Stokes goal- they seemed utterly broken for that 5 minutes. Of course I may be wrong about details- but these are my memories.
Didn't matter one bit,all the **** we'd had to listen to from those bullshit man u fans,"the real final was in the semi versus Derby" and "the draw had robbed the country of a decent final" etc etc.my main memory was my mates glasses coming off when we scored and getting smashed,he couldn't even see the half way line after that and didn't give a stuff.Oh and seeing all those pissed off faces on the other platform - priceless.
Sorry to read that last paragraph Lff,reminded me though my dad was in hospital with leukaemia at the time of the final and they bloody won it for him after he'd supported them all his life, sadly he passed away during that August at least his team had won something!
CHANNON STRIKES FASTER THAN BRITISH LEYLAND was my favourite. Or should this be on the politics thread?!
The local catholic church had a poster upon which they normally advertised upcoming jumble sales and the like. The next day they put up a new poster bearing the words, "You needed us, we were there"
Think they'll have to use a different bus next time. Wonder what happened to the car Bobby Stokes won himself for scoring the winning goal?
Was quite a bit before my time but great reading peoples memories and seeing pictures of memorabilia, keep it coming guys!! Let's hope we get to win one in my lifetime too.
Yeah, bronze GLX, I think. As far as I can remember, Bobby never took any driving lessons in the end. EDIT: Got the colour wrong [silver], but the model right. Probably got it mixed up with The Sweeney's Granada. It's shown here in Mick Channon's testimonial footage:
Post-match interviews. There's a surprising amount of stuff on Youtube about that year. I think Mick gets close to being a bit weepy:

I went to all the games apart Villa & Bradford away. Remember easing my way towards back of stand when we were losing to Villa at home (would never leave early tho). WBA away was massive. Wembley was an absolutely magic day. Made a flag the day before. Met at The Swallow early morning for pre-coach drinks & lots of. Drank copious amounts of beer, played poker & sang all way up to Wembley on the coach. Remember being so excited during the game & could hardly contain myself when Bobby scored. Never really ever thought we would lose - just knew we'd win. Remember going back to the coach park after game & a massive gang of United came running towards us & I ran with a few others but got caught & took quite a bashing ............. strange but never hurt ! Loved the evening back in So'ton & the scarf I wouldn't let go to the Utd thugs, got pinched by some lovely blonde in the pub !
Similar experience re scarf, although I never got hit. Just a few kicks to the back of the leg.......I must have been running away A mate of mine got pounced on in the car park. Luckily for him another mate was in the vicinity and single-handedly took on 6 or more Utd fans. When the police arrived, so successful had he been that the police wanted to arrest him. Funny thing about the game itself though, its exactly as you said, we knew we were going to win. I put a bet on, which I never do. Re the Fisher goal against Villa. It was right in front of me and I remember being almost disappointed. Crazy but we were doing well in the league at the time and I didn't want us distracted by a cup run. Ha....what a distraction! I was in the Painted Wagon on the night we beat Villa away and I announced that we were going to win the Cup. My mate, to this day, thinks I'm psychic!
I love these stories guys and gals. I hope the club have something planned for Sunday, I really do. It's going to be a wonderful day.
I met Bobby Stokes in 1987. I couldn't wait to ask him about the goal.... He told me he "shinned" it .... genuinely
