Bristol City have added an 18-goal striker for their Championship play-off push
Saikou Janneh fired Torquay to promotion from the National League South.

Lee Johnson has always been a head coach who makes bold decisions and the Bristol City boss has thrown a wildcard into his squad by recalling Saikou Janneh from his hugely successful loan at Torquay United.

Janneh, 19, was not involved in the Gulls' matchday squad for Friday's 2-1 defeat by Chippenham Town as Johnson activated a clause in his agreement to bring him back to Ashton Gate.

Bristol Live understands the Gambian forward, who has scored 18 goals in 34 league and cup games for Torquay, has a slight injury so will not be involved in the matchday squad for Monday's Championship clash against Sheffield Wednesday.

But Gulls manager Gary Johnson - father of Lee - confirmed his return is for tactical, not personal reasons.

"He nearly went back in January, but they agreed for him to stay here," Johnson told Devon Live .

"He's been a great servant to us, and we are thankful that we were allowed to play a part in his development.

"They want to keep him around in case they need him for the play-offs in the Championship.

"They know he is going to be a top player, and we know it too."

Janneh, who moved to England from Gambia when he was 13, only signed for the academyl terms at BS3 less than a year ago after impressing on trial following stints with Bath City, Clevedon Town and Cadbury Heath.

It was his second attempt at impressing the Robins talent scouts having initially being taken on trial at 16-year-old after scoring five goals in one game for the Bath City Academy.

The teenager is a tall, powerful and quick forward who has shown during his time at Plainmoor his ability to play in the shoulders of defenders, using his acceleration to find space in behind.

A fine finisher, who favours his left foot but can also score with his right, Janneh's sense of timing inside the penalty area, in terms of reading passes or capitalising on mistakes, has seen him develop into an excellent goal-poacher.

He is also known as a lively character who can add another dimension to the dressing room as well as his presence on the field where, you'd envisage, Johnson using him as an impact substitute in the final 10-15 minutes of games.

Gary Johnson's Torquay secured promotion into the National League last weekend and are 10 points clear of second-placed Woking with two matches remaining.

Neither will get a chance to show their stuff until we are mathematically out of the playoffs and perhaps that will come against Derby.

To be fair it is the papers indicating he will play. He is at a team that has won their championship, what does he gain by staying. I would imagine LJ just wants him in and around the squad see what he is like. Then next season lend him to league 1 or 2. This is about player development
