Outside of perhaps Leeds (and maybe some places in Cornwall) I doubt you'll find many that share that view - with all due respect, Ray Clemence was a better keeper tha Nigel - but was unfortunately around at the time that Shilts was in his pomp. Shilts learnt his trade from Gordon Banks whilst a young lad at Leicester and it showed. I couldn't pick between Banks and Shilton, they were both that good. It was no surprise to see Brian Clough snap shilts up as part of his master plan - and it worked.
That's what happens when a player plays for one club for his entire prime. Martyn would have been England's no.1 at almost any other time, but it was pretty hard to get in ahead of David Seaman (who we trained).
