Didn't Jose say he would like to go into coaching here? Get his badges etc?
the Everton rumour is a non runner for me, everton are not playing in Europe and Jose has ambition and he is 32 now.
UTD understandably are a massive draw.....but would he be captain? Start every game?.......no for me.

Isn't this just all part of the press transfer circus? Jose and Jose are both Portuguese that's enough for the press.
I agree with you about Everton and I can't see ManU seeing him as the answer to their problems at CB. (Pepe might be)
He's too old, too cheap and too Saints, he wouldn't be captain and if as you say he isn't starting every game why are they buying him?
I think we have been spooked by previous exit incidents <monster> <yikes>

If you asked me list all Saints players at the start of pre season on how likely they were to leave, Jose would of been pretty near the bottom. (In my opinion)

This is my suspicion. The club did not leak any of the Forster, JWP, Bertrand contract offers, however they have leaked the Tadic, Cedric, Fonte deal?

Would not surprise me if Tadic & Cedric signed new deals, but at 33 years of age in December, with a bid of £9-£10 million for Fonte, the club would except but spin it that he was offered a new deal bla bla bla?

Keeping him as the top earner isn't spin, it shows we know he is important to us.
We want to keep him not avoid looking bad for losing him.
He would only be released if we thought it was in our interests and that would cost a lot more than £9m.

Anyway if he tried to leave he would have to be released from the grip of Fran & Mrs S's cold dead hands <double>

New contract or not, I'd be very very dissapointed in Fonte if he pushed for and went to Everton. Manchester United is a little different.

Suspect this is just agent pushing for a pay rise.

Wasn't he already pretty much top earner though? That's why he signed a new deal in October 2015. So that would imply someone who has joined/signed a new deal recently is earning more. Or maybe it's that reason combined with the interest from Everton/Man Utd.

We wouldn't need to give him a new contract to show how much we love him as he signed a big extension recently, unless he has a clause where he gets a new deal that automatically matches highest earner like in football manager.

They didn't buy him to make Saints weaker. I honestly think they bought him because he seemed useful as a backup, and we wanted to sell. They were getting what they thought was a decent deal and by doing so they probably felt it would help to get them Lallana.

As Schad pointed out, Lambert got plenty of opportunities, probably more than they expected due to injury. He didn't do very well, perhaps because he had lost it but also almost certainly because Rodgers was terrible and no one did well under him.

To the extent they treated him badly it was due to incompetence, not bad intention. To the extent that we may have treated Lambert badly it was fully intentional. We didn't think he could cut it anymore. I believe that we could have kept him if we wanted to.

Which isn't to say we are the bad guys, either. We were able to get Lambert his dream shot, and he was not wrong to take it. It was a deal that really worked well for everyone on paper. And we took that money and bought Long and Mane with it and that really worked out well for us.

Football is a dirty business. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. There is no reason to blame Liverpool for buying Lambert.

I can agree that perhaps its a shame the way it all ended (though ask yourself if you would really trade Lambert for a Euro spot and a midtable finish) but the responsibility for it lies with Saints.

Oh I see it all now. Liverpool bought him off us to do us a favour. Of course, how silly of me. ;)
