Listen. I have said this before, and may well say this again. We are not in any position to be city of culture, nor is the economy. Far from it, we are at best now in what will be understood to be the start of a sustained depression - this was the most predictable and predicted situation - far more even than 2008. Who suggest an economic plan for the city that is built around bulding loads of places for people to spend money (rather than earn) when nearly half the people in the city are inextreme financial trouble.) It isn't rocket science.

What should we have done and be doing?

I would say investing heavily - as many US cities have - in STEM industries (science, technology, engineering, mathematics). 700 jobs at a heavilysubsidised company does not cut it when comapared with the total paucity of STEM educational opportunities for people within the city. It might make a good headline for a moron. Instead those at the council will take the easy win of a city of culture bid while all the local happy clappers will applaud. No doubt they will moan about the failings of the city of culture bid in exactly the same way some of them are now suggesting pedestrianisation of the city centre has been a failure.

    So be it.

We aren't in junior school. Far from it. 'Good laugh you are' doesn't cut it with adults.

Edit - there is time to graft and time to party. ow we need to be grafting, but all our council is doing is setting our city up for a party. ****ing missing the boat because economically things aren't getting better. And see that link I provided - our city is not cut out for the level of consumption our council is setting up for us. This is obvious for anyone with half a brain, and I will not be apologising for telling anyone that listens that they are a moron for thinking the city of culture bid is a good idea lol.

If we get the City of Culture right, some of the out of town advisors may just find it good enough to live in...

Edit in reply to DMD - am sure some will. But we are missing what I think must be near enough our last chance. I was born here and ok there is no love lost for me with this city, I still care enough to give a ****. What guts me is the city of culture I know is the total wrong bus. It is the top ten city, pioneering city mistake writ larger than the other attempts, while avoilding all the stuff that actually needs to be done. See what I mean?

    Oh goody, RonaldF is here.

Could it be the RonF from CI? The one who has all the not-so-witty banter with John Culverwell?

Culverwell and Ronald Fairfax were teachers at William Gee. The latter also presnted history videos of Hull. I think their footy forum personas means they went to Gee as pupils.

Yup, barrel of laughs alright :emoticon-0114-dull:

NO I do not miss that at all. I would love to see all of the figures relating to the city of culture bid - have asked repeatedly and it has always gone deathly quiet. Please someone publish all the figures regarding the city of culture bid.

But never mind that - the important thing is the opportunity cost. Spend money on this or that bit of pavement - 1. if the people in the city aren't trained to do stuff who gives a ****? 2. If the young people in the city aren't trained to do stuff when they find they have to leave, who gives a ****?

Lets be honest. And I welcome anyone that disagrees with me here, but we first go top ten city. That failed - lets double down - we pay £400k plus on someone to come up with that ****ing stupid pioneering city logo. Right that failed. Well should we admit defeat "NEVER. MOARRRRRRR. We will be CITY OF CULTURE!!!!!"

I would laugh but I know what services have been cut to pay for this pr/personal aggrandisement vehicle.

I definitely read it. Either it was that 'well just get behind it anyway' total nonsense. Or it was something else. But if it was anything other than that let me know because I wouldn't have ignored a reasonable response. I never do.
