Problem is that there's little room for poachers I the modern game! Phillips was a poacher but also had ability outside of that. Bent was a poacher full stop. Defoe is, for the most part, a poacher and little else. How many other clubs have poachers as their main striker? Not really sure there are any

True enough but when I see them drop deep I see them panic, they're rushed, lack the composer to look up and the balls to turn and face goal. Who's going to give them an option further forward when they're not capable of creating themselves the space to turn and pick a pass. It would just leave us wide open when they inevitably lose the ball. You're right about the midfield fella, which as why I said the forwards don't contribute themselves to creating chances rather than holding them solely responsible. Everyone needs to contribute. When our biggest attacking threat is a full back you now we need a lot of work on the attacking side.

Plenty of times I've seen Fletch pick up a ball on half way though mate and simply have no out ball due to the chronic lack of movement.

If a forward drops deep to collect a ball and there is no runner on, then they are restricted in what they can do, through little fault of their own.

I genuinely think Fletch & Defoe would score plenty if the midfield and movement was better.

I dont think it helps that the 4 managers before Dick were all defensive minded...

It's the whole spine of the team that is the problem. As @Funky Dick has said elsewhere our centre halves are so slow they need covering by the midfielders who in turn have to play ridiculously deep. More pace in central defence would allow us to play a higher defensive line, which in turn would mean runners from midfield not having to make it upfield from our own 18 yard line in order to provide an out ball.

I've seen Catts for example play some wonderful passes, but if he is having to make them from deep in our own half they are not much use

Like I said mate I agree, but the midfield doesn't make them any less or more comfortable on the ball which is what i'm on about, their footballing ability. I don't rate it, put a good midfield around them and Fetch would probably score loads, but he'd still be a **** footballer. I just like an up front option who can play football. Get one of them and CM who can create with a bit of pace thrown in there it gives more options to tailor our game to expose weakness on an opponent to opponent bases, at the moment we're stuck on a single default, extremely limited one dimensional setting. All Dick could do with them is get them to do the simple things right. We're limited mate. Improving this window but limited.

Reminds me a bit of the debates us United fans used to have about Berbatov. He was a silky player, a first touch to die for and had a beautiful finish in him. Trouble is, he never did any graft, lazy **** was more interested in tucking his stupid hair behind his ears and watching Rooney do all his running for him.

In the end he needed it put 2 yards out with an open goal or he wasn't interested, let's face it no team needs to pay £30m for that kind of striker.

Same applies here, you could get a young kid who would stand there thinking he's the **** and grab you two a season for peanuts, why pay somebody silly money to do it? If he has that much dosh he should at least get a hair transplant he looks like a grandma's whispy mole.

When you consider Blackburn want £14m for Rhodes then Fletch is worth far more than £4m. We have to be realistic though and I don't think we'll get a better offer ffor a player in last year of contract.

Hope it makes a deal ppossible that might have just been out of range beforehand.

    I'd sell
    Fletcher
    Bridcutt
    Buckley
    Roberge
    Mavrias

So do I, but we won't get the chance to find out now :emoticon-0112-wonde
It's obvious to me that any forwards would benefit from better service, though :emoticon-0105-wink:
