Yeah but the individual parts of the word are from Ancient Greek "rub" and "through": Origin late 16th century (denoting a disquisition): from French, via Latin from Greek diatribē ‘spending of time, discourse’, from dia ‘through’ + tribein ‘rub’. But, more importantly, telling JWM that it originally meant "way of spending time" doesn't give me quite the same opportunity to make a joke about him being the proverbial masturbator
