Fans celebrate as Shrewsbury Town agree badge change
Fan power has won the day at Shrewsbury Town – with a pledge to bring back the traditional ‘Loggerheads’ design on a new badge.
Chief Executive Matt Williams has confirmed a new badge is likely to be in place in time for the start of the next season after the club’s Supporters Parliament called for a change.
Last week it was revealed 91.5 per cent of the 1,171 people canvassed by the parliament said they would like to see the badge return to the old design or be given a fresh new look with supporter approval.
The original badge.
Mr Williams has now confirmed the club will begin work on new designs which will feature the three lions and the club motto Floreat Salopia.
He said: “It’s no secret that the chairman has been a Town supporter all his life and it has been abundantly clear to me during my first few months here that he always wants the best for the club and the business.
“He acknowledges supporter feeling on the badge issue and is also optimistic that changing the badge will be good for business in terms of brand loyalty and merchandise revenue.
“Again, with consultation with members of the Supporters Parliament, we plan to imminently share a number of new designs for people to vote on, we want the designs to be a visual representation of what we stand for as a club.
“Once the vote is finalised the evolved new crest will first appear on replica shirts in the 2015/16 season.”
Shrewsbury’s current badge has been used since the club moved to their new home at the Greenhous Meadow in 2007.
Mike Davis, vice-chairman of the parliament, said changing the badge is the right decision.
He said: “I am absolutely delighted.
The current unpopular badge.
“We have worked really closely with the football club on this and it’s great that the decision has been made public and they are willing to listen to the fans,” he added.
“It’s been pretty clear for a while now the fans wanted to see the badge changed and we have to say thank-you to the chairman and chief executive for listening and doing it because it’s not as simple as people think.”
Many Town fans were disappointed when the Loggerheads were dropped from the badge and launched a long-running campaign to get them reinstated.
