Reports suggest that a deal was being set up that would have brought 21 year-old Louis Laing to Old Trafford from Sunderland.

However, the installation of Louis Van Gaal as the manager of Manchester United has seen those plans scuppered with Laing, unfortunately, not appearing on the Dutchman`s wish list.

Won't be short of suitors, Blackburn already want him plus newcastle are offering a trial.

so bally takes out of arse then

I don't think Ball has a good enough record of bringing through talent to be labelled an expert. Maybe he was right but I can't see it considering the lad hasn't impressed any of our previous managers. Smells a bit of a Ryan Noble type to me. Lot's of promise, lot's of hype, little to show for it.

we should get shot of him then

Connors attitude easy wrong according to 4 managers but courtesy of him we are still a premier league club. If Laings attitude is wrong so be it but it's Deffo not for his footballing ability. He's gonna be a bloody good player for some team.

A **** load of people said that about Ryan Noble. That didn't work out.

Would have to be registered soon as is already 21 years old. Injuries set the lad way back, never kicked on after his debut.

Should still have a good career in the football league though.

aye, forgot about his injury, bad one at that

Noble looked every bit a premier league player - me and Cest both saw him play a lot for the reserves and both backed the lad to make it - he neve rmade it and is now plying trade down the divisions somewhere - I was gutted about that as I always championed the lad. Laing may be another one

Noble just got released by Conference Premier side Gateshead. Most people thought he'd make the cut at us or someone near our level. Just shows we don't know as much as the pros and need to trust the Sunderland staff to judge and act accordingly.

Love Bally as I do, and always will, something is fundamentally wrong at the academy, and it needs looked at/changed, top to bottom.

you'll set me dad off

I`ve made no secret of my views on this subject but, with Gus and Congerton set to become more involved, I expect to see changes/improvement.

This new Chris Blake chappie coming in also suggests the set up is being closely looked at.

Its about time as the present set up is not delivering, but its a tough step up from the youth team / reserves into the first team and it is strange that over the years only those that are fortunate enough, to get the chance early doors, ever make it. It seams to be the case that if you don't shoot through the system rapidly, it does not help, but hinders, your development. There is something wrong somewhere, and it goes back a lot further than Kevin Ball.

Youngsters agrees deal at City Ground.
Defender Louis Laing will join Nottingham Forest when his Sunderland contract expires on July 1.
The 21-year-old has agreed a one-year deal with the Championship club, with an option for a second year.
Laing, a product of Sunderland's Academy, made his first-team debut as a substitute against Wolves in May 2011.
The former England youth international also spent the second half of the 2011-12 season on loan at Wycombe, making 11 appearances.
Forest's first-team coach, Brian Eastick, told the club's official website: “Louis has got a fantastic attitude in terms of trying to improve.
"He’s exactly the sort of player we want in and around the first-team squad, so we’ve offered him a contract here for a year with a year’s option. We think he’s got a lot of potential."
