a guy who i worked with for over 20 years was done for statutory rape a couple of years ago. the rape was on his own step daughter and had happened nearly 30 years earlier. he got 16 years. why has this level of justice not been levelled at Hall?

I'm not,although there probably is an argument for him being mentally ill in there somewhere.I was thinking more of people like Stefan Kisko who was in jail for years until DNA came along and proved his innocence.BTW,I always wondered about the "broad daylight" bit.Would have been a lesser crime if they had waited until dusk?
I knew it wouldn't take long for the "mentally ill" arguement to be used to try and excuse and in some way justify what is calculated cold blooded murder!

The Yorkshire Ripper, Ian Huntley the Soham Murderer, The Suffolk Ripper, Ian Brady... They should all be executed for their crimes and not kept at our considerable expense in some cushy prison. In these cases there should be nothing short of retribution in the form of the death sentence. They showed none of their victims one shred of human compassion so why should they be shown any?

Ridiculous sentence whilst on the subject what about Ian Brady wanting to end his life? ****ing hell he totally lost whatever human rights he had years ago when him and that ****ing dog Hindley butchered five kids some of which bodies have never been found! What annoys me is his cost the taxpayers thousands to have a hearing today, keep him locked away for good no hearings etc.
I'm quite liberal with politics but for a long time now victims rights and those of their families have been taken away by the courts and greedy lawyers in the name of human rights, which usually are in perpetrators interest and line peoples pockets, enough is enough.

I assume there was an element of 'plead guilty, save the cost of a lengthy trial and avoid putting the victims through it and the sentence will be reduced'. Was his age also taken into account I wonder?
And what exactly has he been convicted of? From the little I have read about it, the actual offences appear to be things like kissing, touching a breast and putting a hand up a skirt.
Perhaps 15 months doesn't seem so unreasonable when you compare those offences with serious sexual assault or rape.

I'm not saying its right (it certainly isn't). The judge was tied by the max sentence available at the time the offence took place. Back in the 60's the justice system was over simplistic for sexual abuse. Rape led to (arguably) appropriate sentences, but other types of abuse, including inciting to non-penetrative sexual activity were rarely if ever prosecuted and the max sentence was shamefully low. The judge would have imposed much more (3-5 years as a guess) if the offences were committed since the Criminal Justice act 1991 or 2003.
The test would be if the victims were able to choose between the perp being chucked in the bridewell and pursuing a compo claim.Just saying.
Going slightly off topic I heard on the news yesterday it's cost the British tax payer £4m in police fees to guard the Uruguay embassy to prevent the wiki leaks guy from slipping away !!! WTF ?
