I've done this on various boards I go on. I try to pick Charlton plus another team 11's. You can do this exercise with around 2/3 of the teams in the league.I try to pick only players who played for both first teams but will be flexible around Goalies.David Button's 12 minutes for Spurs at Doncaster has completed the Charlton/Spurs team although I still need to put a Goalie on the bench who played in neither first team. Do you have a real life? I don't remember Peter Guthrie, or Phil Warman playing for Millwall, but apart from that they all bring back memories. How about an XI who only ever played League football for Charlton?
Kim Grant, Micky Bennett, Jamie Stuart, all Millwall and Charlton. Ben Roberts and Danny Haynes were only on loan at Millwall.
I don't remember Phil Warman at Millwall, but he was here when I first started going to the Valley so he may have been at Millwall before. The Millwall line up has a few interesting names. I liked Terry Brisley, and I can remember the covered end chanting 'Cripps Cripps Cripps' when we were awarded a penalty back in the seventies (he stepped up and scored it, but god knows who the opposition were!)
Phil Warman went straight from us to Millwall and played one season there. I remember Terry Brisley's first game for us - there was a solitary Millwall fan in the covered end, somewhat the worse for wear, chanting Brisley's name throughout the first half and begging him to come back to Millwall. Brisley came out for the second half, went into the covered end and tried to console the bloke, lovely gesture.

None of you Leslie Welchs taking up this challenge? To stop it being a list of one-hit wonders who made a few appearances for us but failed to make the grade in League football, I shall impose the proviso that they must have played for us in at least two different seasons. Easier to do for the old days when there was more loyalty in football. Actually most of that "loyalty" derived from the fact that there was a maximum wage of 12 pounds a week (times have changed a little?) so it wasn't worth players moving house in many cases. And I suppose you need a memory like Leslie Welch to remember who Leslie Welch was.
I'll kick this off with the central defensive king pin of Richard Rufus. Also - i'll have Solly at Right Back. And Harriott at Left Wing. Before my time but can Bartram and Peacock also be included in this?
You are a good sport, Alex. I thought I was being sent to Coventry and I would hate to follow in the footsteps of Leon Clarke and Dowie. Yes, Bartram and Peacock count. I have a vague memory of Peacock trying his luck in the US, but whether that was as a player or coach I cannot remember. Anyway, I think we can discreetly draw a veil over this rare mis-step in his otherwise honorable career. Another of our truly greats, John Hewie, only ever played first-class League football for Charlton. I think we can count the South African leagues as "non-league" though I can see this could get debatable. The Danish League we should count as "First Class" but what about (for example) the Icelandic?
I thought of him but could not remember if he ended up with another League side. I would guess comfortably in our top ten appearance list, but I am stuck on this damned tropical island without my trusty Cameron. Reeves was never a favourite of mine but I was probably too young to appreciate his better qualities. Interesting you say "at the back". This was before the concept of double centre-backs had totally taken over. Reeves was a defensive half-back similar to Hughes or Holland not as defensive as his contemporary Bobby Moore. When he joined in with an attack we never expected too much. He held the record as Charlton's youngest League scorer (at 17) until he lost it to Shelvey. The curious thing is he only scored one more goal in nine years and nearly 300 matches.
Unfortunately eddie, he had to retire from the game after a shocking tackle that cinder-tracked him behind the goal at the Jimmy Seed end. God, he was down for a long time. Certainly one of my favourites - solid, dependable, unflashy and with a lovely timing in the tackle. We definitely missed him when he went.
