I wonder why it is an offence here, but in Italy its all part of the football package.

Letting off a smoke flare is the ridiculous bit. You tell me just what there is to gain from letting off a RED flare in a crowd. Is it a fun activity, no. Is it a show of support, no. Does it make you appear hard, no. It's ****ing pants.
"We are Ull, look at me I've got a flare".
If he wants to let off flares, get him out to Afgan, he can put out as much smoke as he wants there.
It was a dumb thing to do and both of them deserve what they got. Football fans, smoke and heat are not a good mix.

40 it is an offence in Italy. In most grounds however the stewards/police steer well clear of the terraces in most games.
I lived out there and followed the local team
Up side of no stewards-great atmosphere for small club
    Downside-thuggery and racism/homophobia
The main problem was that despite the places on the terraces having numbered places everyone ignored them so tracing racists was impossible.
This was a crowd who cheered Di Canio because of his political views(fascism).2 of us booed him and somehow lived to tell the tale.
You tell me which is best-stewards or no stewards?

A banning order seems a bit excessive. A slap on the wrist would have done it

This doesnt exactly help your case with WYP

So, you wouldn't allow it here but you would turn a blind eye to it happening in afghan? What a cock you are!

Football fans from around the world would read this and laugh. What a ****ing joke. #AMF

It just seems a bit of fun to add to the atmosphere; what next? those air horns banned incase someone lets it off in someone's ear? Ban the England band because the trumpet might effect someone's hearing, or a drumstick might slip out of the drummers hand and into someone's eye? Maybe ban clapping? Someone might catch someone elses face and they might have forgotten to cut their finger nails that morning.

Completely deserved, and will set an example.

It was their choice to break the law.

Let people off, and the stands will just get worse. If everyone stays within the law there can be some friendly banter and the stewards can stand off. Flares, fighting, pitch incursions, coin throwing, foul chanting etc. has no place in sport and is NOT part of the game. Excuses for it are hollow.

Flares may not pose a drastic risk, but they are dangerous for a few reasons. They have been banned for a reason. Trumpets aren't banned, but each club has the right to decide what they want in.

I'm with the OP, this is a ****ing disgrace and sums up why I've fallen out of love with football. This year is the fewest games I've been to in 25 years and i can only see me going to fewer next season. Its not cos of the football, which is better than ever,it's the experience.

The authorities won't be happy until we file in the stadium in silence, hand over a small fortune for merchandise and tickets, sit still for 120 minutes and then leave the same way we came in.

OT but with Di Canio something of a media darling at present, I do wonder why no journalist asks him about his inspiration for having a large Mussolini tattoo on his arm and the outstretched one arm salute he regularly gave to the facist Laziale irreducible?

I didn't say he wasn't, I said I'm surprised no journalist had asked him about it. Would it be fine if it came out tomorrow that Prozzer has a massive Hitler tattoo on his back and spends his summer weekends on Neo Nazi marches?

can someone who thinks this action is a disgrace tell me what a flare adds to the crowd/atmosphere/experience other than some tool going to school or work on Monday and being able to act like billybigballs!

    "how was the game?"
    "I set off a flare"
"of right, how was the game?"

I think all the Hudds game stuff has exaggerated a few views about this incident.

How do flags, scarves and singing of songs add to the crowd / atmosphere / experience? For me a flare sits directly alongside these.

BCC that's absolute tosh mate, flags scarves and hats etc show allegiance, support and a passion for your club. A flare shows you to be an attention seeking forkwit who gets more out of the flare experience than the game.

40 of us on a stag do in blackpool 2011 and one of our lot let one of these flares off outside a packed beer garden pub. Old bill drove by stopped and nicked him to a chorus of boos . An hour later he was back with us with a telling off from the old bill not too do it again. One copper even joked later its a good job you didnt sing any city songs cause we would of thrown the book at you.
