Asians, Africans, Europeans that sort of idea. More geography based than skin tone based, after all a Black man can be an English man just ask Viv Anderson. I'm not sure many people use the term white either I think Caucasian is more popularly used in polite society. If you don't care though use what ever terms you like its a free country anit it grand!
As above Coloured was basically originally used as a distinguishment between Superior (White) and Inferior (red, yellow, black , brown, .......) I used to think it simply meant of Black/Brown African decent which I'm guessing is how it's been "mis-used" previously in this thread. If you take it's literal meaning though of "anything but white" I'm struggling to think of a context where that wouldn't be racist.
As part of my training i had to partake in an equality day. It was basically common sense stuff such as 'you can't turn someone down for treatment due to their skin colour', etc. However, during the training i got quiet annoyed. The lecturer started telling the class about how in certain towns/city's their is Dr's surerys that will only deal with ethnic minorites. I asked the simple question of 'Is this not classfied as racism?'. I was astonished by the lecturers response of 'no,no, this is classified as positive racism'. Thankfully, before i kicked off, two of my friends who whilst are british citizens one was born and raised in Portugal and the other Zimbabwe both beat me to the punch as stated 'How the hell can any form of racism be seen as positive?'. I finished the debate off with basically asking that as a white, non-religious male in the Uk i have no rights then, to which the lecturer basically laughed and said yeah. My point to all this is, 'are we now the minority?' and also the impression i get having various friends from different ethnicities is that the only people that seem to have a problem with putting these 'asian only', 'african only' hospitals, etc are in fact white politicians and these so called minorties are just wanting to be treat as equals.
A thought for the day after reading this thread. Can you imagine a world without laughter? A world without hugs & kisses? A world of constant sadness? A world of not being able to make your own choices or having your own opinion? Well that world exists. [NSFW]Just get married.[/NSFW] Having lived in a number of countries as a minority one learns about tolerance
Would seem so, but I am impressed the level of debate, no cross words no arguements, just debate. Very pleasing. but the opening thread still is as it is.
Being racist is all about making others feel inferior because of their skin colour or ethnic origin and using that to belittle and oppress them. Unfortunately this what white pride, whites only has come to mean. Fortunately my colour does not define me but ethnicity does I'm English and to me that's about where your born not the colour of your skin. This great Nation of ours is a bastardised nation made up of many different ethnic backgrounds and mixed blood lines and has been for millennia.
