Another thing I didnt know, but the chairman of Ashington I do know, so tomorrow round his gaff, Alf should be able to give me a pointer, thanks for that Monty.
Certainly Derek Foster (goalkeeper) was only 15 years old on his (forced) debut... Both senior goalies were 'out' Might be wrong but I think he made his debut v Leics City at Roker 3 - 3 He only had a couple of games, as we were shipping goals left right and centre ... I remember Sharkey very well. Amazing header of the ball for one so 'short'. I was there the night we beat Norwich 7 -1 He ended up at Leics City, signed by Matt Gillies...
early days for me i missed that game but i saw neil martin bag a hat trick against peterbourgh a few years later
haha vince, i'm not that young, i seem to remember then vaguely as a kid....did they get banned or just fazed out? Kinda eminds me of a medicine ball used by boxers..........
You should try heading them when they were wet, I used to pray I wouldn't get it on the lace when the keeper kicked it out, split my head open more than once.
What are you implying? That footballers have it easy these days,,,,,,,,,,can;t believe that for one minute.........prima donna's. This is why is stick around to the forum.....i love the opinions of the elder statesmen.................appreciate it...........
86 appearances - 38 goals Yet another good 'un sold ... they couldn't resist .... nothing changes .... LOL.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neil_Martin
Speaking of the Leicester game, Charlie Hurley spent so much time keeping on Foster he was off his usual game. I recall Cloughie writing in the Sunday Mirror that it was the measure of a great player when people talked of him having a terrible game rather the usual Hurley praise.
Yes, ........... a 15 year old playing in the top tier! Charlie was always 'protective'. I recall him looking after Monty too ...
Somebody should show Steve Bruce this thread and ask him why we didn't seem to have any problems with Cec being a Geordie, maybe it was because he knew the game and was a good honest footballer.
Yes I think Derek Foster's first game was a 3 - 3 draw with Leicester in 1964. I also think the Leicester goalie was a guy called Gordon Banks.
