Would be pretty happy if this does go through. I had heard that it had been communicated to other parties that the offer from Saints was his preference at the beggining of this week, but that we weren't quite out of the woods yet in terms of counter-offers from another club

The view inside the club is also that if we can replace Shea Charles by picking up a top end Championship midfielder on a free like this, it helps with the budget in terms of now needing to go buy and buy at least one new striker who is worthy of a top end Championship side (which had not been in Plan A for the window, which involved keeping Ross Stewart)

So is he seen as a similar player to Charles? I’ve never seen him play. Seen him on lists of best potential free agent pickups for championship sides.

Hopefully this rules out the suggestions some people out there have made that Downs is the Stewart replacement. I assume most of them were on the wind up but some were probably pessimistic and actually thought this

I’ve read a tiny bit and he seems deeper lying than Charles. So perhaps more a Jander or Downes type? Which means if one of those goes we spend money on the more box to box new midfielder rather than a direct replacement. Still has same budget impact

Who were the two of our midfielders that really never seemed to play well together. I’m drawing a blank

Downes and Charles together never seemed to click.

Charles and Downes

Neil is definitely more of a deep-lying playmaker type, likes to collect the ball off the defenders and drive forward or put passes between the lines. Doesn't have much attacking flair in his game, as shown by his goals return. I work with a Sunderland fan and he says Neil is at his best when you pair him up with someone who wants to go charging around, flying into tackles and giving him the ball, but is equally comfortable playing box-to-box in a two or as the 'betweener' in a midfield three where one player is more defensive and one is more attacking/box-to-box

So Downes then.

Reactions: Le Tissier's Laces
Obligatory quote from an Ipswich fan I asked if he’s any good

“Nah...very underwhelming for us. Did **** all.

Apparently he was mint for Sunderland the season before...but didn't see it myself”
