We don’t want a likeminded replacement though. We want somebody better. Giles is not a premier league standard defender.

As good as Giles is going forward, defending isn’t his strong point. All the decent prem teams are putting a 6’2 almost CB at full back. Spend 20 on someone like that, make us more defensively solid and it makes sense to recoup 8mil.
What’s to say we’re going to play a back four. Wouldn’t be at all surprised to see us playing 3-4-3/5-2-3 in the majority of away games at least.

I still wouldn’t have him as a LWB in a 5. There are better options out there and we need to upgrade.

He will give away 5+ goals away next year by either losing his man or losing a header back post.

Don’t actively look to sell but if a big comes in we need to look to shift him on.

And replace him with who and for how much though? We're in different territory now and a like-minded replacement could cost much more?

The proven player reminded me of this from 2015

Ah the proven striker like Torres the goal machine at Liverpool who flopped at Chelsea. Liverpool spent most of the Torres money on Andy Carrol another proven striker who flopped at his new club. I bet there were loads of good stats on both of those.
The bottom line is that signing a new player is a gamble, so do you risk a little bit or a lot of money. There is no garantee (sp) that the more you pay the better you get.

It's a tricky one for the club, he's got a year left and we need money, saying that he'd be a decent back up player, but how much would his new contract be as a PL player and would it be too much for a back up player?
I posted a few days ago my surprise that we were being linked with left backs, a Greek and an Italian, but a potential sale of Giles would explain this, rather like all the goalkeeper interest relates to Pandur.

Seems a distorted list of priorities when we definitely need a RB and haven't been linked with any.

Well if we've got over a hundred million to spend I don't see much need for shifting Giles on for buttons then?
If we only have 100mil selling Giles for 8mil is potentially mad, as we then need to buy 3 full backs and that's a fair old chunk of our budget gone.
Keep Giles, don't remember him getting ripped to pieces last season.
But if he only has a year left, it could depend on new terms we offer or what he wants and also who we have lined up.
