Part of me is surprised he’d drop to L1 when his last job in England had him getting promoted to the PL and the other part of me thinks it makes some sense
It should be straightforward enough to get Leicester promoted and that will mean he gets a 12 month run up to playing in the Championship again, during which team he’ll have been able to teach his style of play etc against lower calibre opponents with much less in terms of resources.
Leicester is one of the biggest/best non-PL clubs in terms of stature and infrastructure, even while they’re down in L1

I think he finished midtable there, not sure how good their squad was at the time but would say that's fairly decent.
I think he will get them up but that'll be brilliant as a load of their fans will get taken in by him and the collapse will be brilliant.
Actually think it makes quite a bit of sense for Leicester. Whatever you think of the style of play, he was undeniably good at pulling together a very fractured and toxic dressing room environment and improving the energy and togetherness around the club. Leicester desperately need that and in his previous EFL jobs he has always delivered the sort of league finish you’d expect relative to resources
Yeah I remember when this was first mooted ages back people said he wouldn't go there but I always thought he might. As you say it makes sense as it should be an 'easy' way to get another promotion on his record with a decent sized club.

On paper, you would think that Russell Martin would be able to work wonders with Leicester. However, I thought that they had serious money issues and that the club has handicapped by player contracts which would work to their detriment. There were comments on this board as to the state of affair at Leicester and Radio 5 did a piece on the last weekend of the season where the considered opinion was that they would struggle to resolve the issues to mount a promotion campaign.
I can see why some are predicting that Martin can solve their problems but I understood the lack of money and issues within the playing staff are alleged to make this an extremely difficult taste. More of a challenge than Southampton and Rangers.

I think Martin is the absolute “best” they could hope for as his coaching credentials are in relative tatters after the Saints and Rangers debacles.Leicester City on brink of financial armageddon after huge parachute payments revelation: report

I can see them being “ok”…. But “ok” at best after an off season of player turnover and from what I remember from other articles, they need to recruit staff at a senior level too as well as decide what direction the club are taking generally as their recruitment and strategic direction has been all over the place.
They also run a real risk of losing their other assets if any decent youngsters from their expensive academy too; think I saw Monga linked with Arsenal somewhere.
The lack of cash flow from the selling of their parachute payments means they only have money from players leaving and wages saved which will be considerable (at that level), but someone needs to get hold of the finances and set a budget, etc, but Aiyawatt also has a pretty appalling track record at strategy/direction/finances/senior staff recruitment, etc.
It’s going to be hugely busy on the player trading front, hugely busy at senior level and if, what I think is a big if, Martin can survive all that… he may do ok.
Will be a painful old time for them all…. And if on top of all of the above, Russ-ball doesn’t work….. that’s Leicester in it for the long term and Russ’s career down the swanny….
This is exactly as I see Martin's predicament. If he can get Leicester promoted, it will salvage his reputation but I see much of his senior squad going and those that remain not having the stomach for Division 1 football. They effectively gave up last season.
Martin will be left with a squad of free, loan and academy players. I think survival will be difficult enough let alone turning the ship around. I think that this is a potential "Portsmouth" situation for them Relegation to League 2 might not be as unlikely as has been made out. The Leicester match will be box office gold for every away match and Martin will need to get the fans on board quickly regarding the home games.
I will be watching this with fascination. Not convinced that they are nailed on for promotion by any means.......
