People have been chucking empty cans into the pond in QG. This is why we can’t have nice things. The utter dregs of society just don’t adhere to the social contract and treat their own city like a dump.
Wtf is wrong with people here ?
You don't see this in other countries .

Peter Levy highlighted the subject on Look North the other day, stuff thrown into one of the ponds despite some barriers around it. He even laid on the floor to retrieve some rubbish on the other side of the barrier. Chewing gum was also mentioned, some stuck to the new pavers already. I would have thought that with today's tech crazy world there doesn't seem to be an easy method to get chewing gum up off the floor. The thing with QG is that there are yet more of those wooden benches that look awful now in Queen Victoria Square. A coat of preservative may spruce them up a bit but I suppose that the wood has been pre treated with something.

They must have got a deal on those wooden benches, many of the first tranche got an upgrade with a bolt on backrest. Like many things these days the initial money is found but there doesn't seem to be any available for on going maintenance.

Regarding the littering, most on here are of an age when our parents taught us not to litter. A clip round the ear, told to go back and pick it up and find a bin. Similar on school trips too.

Add to that cultural differences.
Yes and no. Things weren't that clean in the 1970s. I was fishing shopping trolleys, car parts and plastic bags out of Beverley beck, alongside occasional pike. Got better throughout the 1980s to early 2000s.

Since then, there's a lot more junk with packaging for sale, kids have a greater accessibility to money to buy it and relative budgets for councils to maintain environments have gone down... Not so many parkies anymore.. plus issues with foreigners and natives not always giving a ****. Having a bottle buyback system for plastic bottles and making takeaways directly responsible for the packaging they sell on top of business rates would help. Perfect storm of problems.

Easy solution is a band of geriatrics forming a group where they use their retirement to clean up as a gift to the community... You're not going to convince drug addicts and those with poor compulsion to change by moaning about them unfortunately...

Easy solution is a band of young people who have spent their lives lounging about living on benefits use their time to clean up as a gift to the community. Especially as it is their age group making most of the mess.

So set up a group on Facebook and administer it then... Offer a wrap of heroin or some ridiculously priced can of fruit flavoured IPA for every half tonne of rubbish cleaned from the streets... Set up a dispensary and a weigh scale outside your local tip. Turn the addiction into something that has a benefit for society.

Why didn’t you set up a group on Facebook instead of just spouting your ageist claptrap?

Why does it require a band of 'Geriatrics' to form a group and why would they need to gift the Community anything having worked for 50+ years?

I see litter lying around in my Street,I pick it up and shove it in the appropriate bin,it doesn't need to be an organised campaign, it's common sense and pride in your area that drives this 'Geriatric' to pick up other lazy people's discarded rubbish ...

Working ppl are covering the pensions, health care and other benefits for many pensioners. They could give a little back by doing community work - many do and make a huge difference. Not the taxpayer's fault that pensioners didn't vote for a government that would save money in a fund to cover their costs in the future. Not our fault they choose to use their time drinking and arguing online.

Very little point 'arguing' (debating) anything with your good self because let's face it you've done it all, seen it all and bought every available T-Shirt.If I've been to Tenerife, you've done Elevenerife...I get the drill :emoticon-0148-yes:

Anyway,if you were fishing trolleys out of Beverley Beck in the 70's,you can't be far off being a 'Geriatric' yourself .

The pensioners taxes paid for your parents pensions and benefits and for your health treatment and education. Not the pensioners fault Labour set up a scheme in 1948 which gave us the worst pensions of any developed country. Not the pensioners fault so many young people spend their time lounging about, staring at screens and taking drugs whilst talking ****e online instead of working.
There would be more money if some didn’t bugger off and pay taxes abroad from their jobs which contributed to the deteriation of the climate. Then have the nerve to spend time haranguing people who have spent their life in this country paying taxes and contributing.

Can this taxpayer pensioner have a refund on the income tax he pays? As an offset I'll carry a bag to pick up rubbish. :emoticon-0138-think
