Yeah, I don't think you can read too much into this at all. I would say the following:

1. The EFL could just postpone the final now (you could argue that would theoretically be the fairest thing for all parties) but there are probably all sorts of practical reasons (stadium availability, the required police presence, road closures etc etc) why they don't want to do that unless they absolutely have to.
2. The EFL don't want to rule any punishment in or out or say anything of much substance because the panel deciding the punishment is independent and they don't want to be seen to be interfering in the process.
3. The hearing isn't going to take place until next Tuesday and there's no guarantee the decision will be published that day. The EFL can see that it's not practical to start selling tickets so close to the game. At the same time, if we are kicked out they don't want a load of fans claiming for travel or hotel costs.

So basically they're covering their arses.

My position remains the same in that if they DO decide to kick us out, the appropriate follow-up to that decision would be to promote Hull automatically, not to reinstate Boro.
Totally agree with your last comment ( not that I disagree with the others )

We of course did this to ourselves (whoever sanctioned it, and the person that spied) but the reaction from Boro and the media has been appalling. The photo yesterday showed that someone in and around Boro has been briefing and putting pressure to try and sway an independent review, whilst also clearly publishing false information. Standing 150 yards from a training pitch with an iPhone did not stop Boro from failing to beat us over 210 minutes of football. The punishment they're calling for does not fit the crime.

It depends if Boro are a party in the hearing doesn’t it? If it’s an independent panel then it’s EFL v Saints so if the punishment is something like a big fine the EFL might be happy with that and not bother appealing and Boro can’t do anything about it apart from moan to the EFL to appeal it.

Think this all hinges on whether they have evidence we’ve done it in other games as well
Yeah Boro won't actually be able to appeal themselves.

I still can't believe this is perceived as being worse than cooking the books by football fans.

It was a nipper behind a tree, I feel like I'm living in a alternate universe. If this was on a parody show it'd seem ridiculous.

It would be peak 2026 for us to be punished more than Chelsea did for decades of intentional rule breaking though.

They won't promote Hull automatically, it's their showpiece fixture and they'll want it be played. They'd probably even owe Sky money if it wasn't.

I think you're spot on for the rest of it though.

Presumably this bit - The Independent Disciplinary Commission hearing will take place on or before Tuesday, 19 May - means Tuesday at the latest? As in, it could be sooner? Maybe they're doing it now....

No chance of that.
If we are found to have done this all season and it can be proved , what do you suggest the punishment should be ? I think the EPL will threaten that in such an instance of we do not accept the punishment. It could be used as a threat.

I am convinced this is bigger than just Boro.

Yeah but it's little old Southampton. Can't really blame the EFL or other clubs for thinking that when a large portion of our fan base thinks the same.

If we do get kicked out I seriously hope this is the catalyst for our fans to stop being such walk overs (both internally and externally)

I'm not so convinced. Boro's ground is probably one of the most open, visible training grounds.
