I read an article about Bob Dylan's praise for The Attractions as a backing band for Elvis Costello so I was thinking about who are the best backing bands in Rock history...

I met Frank Zappa's original backing band, waiting for a plane in Budapest. They are all old men, although still very accomplished musicians. They now call themselves 'The Grandmothers of Invention'.What about Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention ?

The whatabouts list is a long one. I give you Booker T and the MG's.What about Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention ?

Was thinking about that but don't have the time at the mo and, for me, it's a varying list dependant on mood so as and when something comes to mind I'll post it as well as playing it loud. You guys are welcome to post your own personal top ten.

I find Zappa an enigma. He was probably the most technically and musically savvy of any rock musician and even had his chamber music championed by Pierre Boulez. There are some tracks which blur the lines between Rock and Jazz and I think that there are some great compositions which are justified as being classics. It is fascinating to discover the musicians who worked with him and there are plenty of interviews with the likes of the late George Duke which testify to Zappa's brilliance. The band members were selected for their ability to read music and Zappa seemed to relish in writing music that was challenging. On the other hand, I find the lyrics often to be quite crass and at odds with the music.I never really got into Zappa.
Here's another fantastic Youtube channel...

THE OFFICIAL 'ANDROIDEO' CHANNEL
"IT'S TIME TO VISUALISE THE MUSICALLY FORGOTTEN..." The reason I started making these 'Droids' on my Samsung S25+ phone, was to placate my need for a visual accompaniment to bands that have little or no footage out there, and/or songs that now seem lost amongst the usually accepted 'classics'...www.youtube.com
I wonder if @TheSecondStain still watches the forum?, I'm sure that he'd appreciate these...

Yeah, they're great. What do you think of the videos? I think that they enhance the music.I'm in the middle of an XTC listening fest myself at present, fantastic band.
I think it was Virgin's on/off decisions about releasing "Wrapped in Grey" as a single that finally made the band go on their infamous strike for several years.
Every time they were about to firmly grasp the hem of glory the band promptly self destructed or were sabotaged by record company sillyness.
My own personal tweak would be to add The E Street Band in there and drop out The Commotions.I read an article about Bob Dylan's praise for The Attractions as a backing band for Elvis Costello so I was thinking about who are the best backing bands in Rock history...
