I read an article about Bob Dylan's praise for The Attractions as a backing band for Elvis Costello so I was thinking about who are the best backing bands in Rock history...

What about Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention ?

I never really got into Zappa.
I find Zappa an enigma. He was probably the most technically and musically savvy of any rock musician and even had his chamber music championed by Pierre Boulez. There are some tracks which blur the lines between Rock and Jazz and I think that there are some great compositions which are justified as being classics. It is fascinating to discover the musicians who worked with him and there are plenty of interviews with the likes of the late George Duke which testify to Zappa's brilliance. The band members were selected for their ability to read music and Zappa seemed to relish in writing music that was challenging. On the other hand, I find the lyrics often to be quite crass and at odds with the music.

Here's another fantastic Youtube channel...

I wonder if @TheSecondStain still watches the forum?, I'm sure that he'd appreciate these...

I'm in the middle of an XTC listening fest myself at present, fantastic band.

I think it was Virgin's on/off decisions about releasing "Wrapped in Grey" as a single that finally made the band go on their infamous strike for several years.

Every time they were about to firmly grasp the hem of glory the band promptly self destructed or were sabotaged by record company sillyness.

Yeah, they're great. What do you think of the videos? I think that they enhance the music.

My own personal tweak would be to add The E Street Band in there and drop out The Commotions.

New album from The Lemon Twigs, Look For Your Mind!, out now and sorry Ian but I ****ing love it!

It is perfectly written, arranged and performed '60s style jangly Power Pop, so if you love that give it a listen!...

I've always loved the Four Tops' Walk Away Renee but I had no idea that it was a cover version.
I've been listening to the original by The Left Banke and the album it came from and it is a revelation!
It's probably one of the best examples of 60s Baroque Pop and is great from start to finish and i've no idea why it isn't more well known...
