... but some things are so rotten the stench permeates every corner.

This is a post, on RTG, I was sent, and sums up this situation perfectly.

I'm so sickened by this but I'll let 'Stortford' explain ...

"This is spot on.

Right here goes. Me and my lad are part of the 65 (Newcastle derby tickets cancelled by the club.)

The person in question sorts my tickets out as my wife isn't well (grade 4 brain tumour) and Tuesday is often a full day at the hospital which is pretty gruelling. He sorts our trains out, I live down south so I don't travel with the main group so its a extra hassle for him, but its never any bother to him. I wouldn't like to try to guess how much money he has saved me personally over the years but will be over £1000, could easily be double that. I have missed 1 away game this season as my Mrs wasn't well and I didn't want to leave her (so I guess my ticket will have been passed on). I normally get to about 12-15 home games a season (I live south of Cambridge and work so midweeks are difficult for me) though with the situation with my Mrs I have probably only done about half the games this season so far. I rarely miss an away game and am on 80+ points.

As others have pointed out he spends hours doing match tickets, train tickets, refunds and has the big private account with LNER with dedicated account manager to help loads of people get cheaper rail fares and tbh some of the younger lads he helps out I doubt would be capable of getting there by themselves and he does this without taking a penny for himself. Also as pointed out earlier, those he helped with match tickets who were folks going in League 1 days and in those days the club actively pushed extra tickets onto him so they could brag about "another sold out away end". Yes he has broken the rules but there was no prior warning from the club.

I should also mention that away from football he has helped my lad on numerous occasions as he had a few teething issues when settling in at Uni. A couple of examples was driving him from Durham to the eye infirmary in Sunderland 3 times in a week when he my lad had a serious eye infection needed urgent attention. He also drove my son down with all his bags when I was under the pump at work and couldn't collect him and he had too many bags for the train. A 500 mile round trip and wouldn't take a penny for petrol. There are several others I could mention. The bloke is as absolute diamond. The club should be hiring him to sort out travel for more fans rather than banning him for 2 years. I am absolutely gutted for the lad as SAFC and helping people is his life.

I am also gutted for my lad, who I dragged round once he was old enough, for back 2 back relegation seasons then 4 years of dross in League 1 for him to then miss the away derby in over a decade, again he has 80+ points, he doesn't deserve to miss out.

As you can imagine I am raging at the club, my appeal fell of deaf ears and I wasn't able to join the fastest finger first race today as was back at hospital with the Mrs and wifi there is ****.
I haven't renewed our tickets yet and am giving serious consideration for just walking away, never thought I would say that. It's not an easy decision as the football provides one of the few areas of normality in my life at the moment and it's a great stress reliever to meet up and have a few pints with the lads i go to the matches with, some for 35-40 years. Not going Sunday is hard to take and I have a very tough decision regarding renewal."

Apologies for it being a bit of a ramble but a lot to get off my chest.

Agree mate ive been affected by the same thing with my 3 tickets for the weekend for me my son and grandson all pulled. Done absolutely nothing wrong at all. The club have progressed so much on the field but off it we have not. Disgusted with them over this. Ive got to say we 3 are still mulling over whether or not to renew our season cards over this.

That's really poor. SAFC had to be sure about the tickets which were cancelled but the checks haven't been good enough.

Hope you get sorted mate. Chris Waters is a great lad so definitely worth contacting if you haven't already.

I cant understand how the club think this is appropriate action.

From what's been said on rtg, there were 3 tickets that failed id checks at Leeds, so I can understand stopping them (IF proved they have been passed on) but to stop all 65 and then to ban the lead booker for such a long time is way over the top and frankly ridiculous.

How can they possibly justify it? The lad organises travel and tickets, he cant then also be held accountable if a tiny minority pass on their ticket and certainly cant be sanctioned if it turns out the tickets where passed on for genuine reasons.

I just cant see the logic in this, even more so when there are active Facebook groups pretty much bragging they sell/pass on tickets.

Why not target them? Why this action? Makes no sense from the club

I sense we are only getting one side of the story here, and possibly not the absolute truth
I know a few of the lads that travel with this branch and they havent missed a game for at least 5 years if not longer, yet they are "guilty" by association and had their tickets for sunday cancelled.

Just because this lad is the one that books the tickets, how can it be him with the ban and all of them suffer?

Like I said surely its the individual ticket holders they should be addressing?

Without knowing the full facts of how they get their tickets, who is accessing who's accounts and whether that's within the rules or not, I'm reluctant to comment, but am fairly sure the club wouldn't be acting if there hadn't been some wrongdoing...

Fair enough, just seems like a sledgehammer to crack a nut especially when there is open touting on facebook

Unfortunately this is the price of 'Success'.
I knew **** like this would happen once we got promoted.
Part of the reason, not the main reason I made a conscious decision not to renew this season prior to Coventry.
I dislike the way modern day football is developing.
I now support SAFC from my armchair and haven't missed a match this season.
This after. 40 years of being a glory hunting season ticket holder

This will lead to the slow death of the village/town/branch support that's sustained SAFC through some very dark days.

Our away support has always stood up to be counted, I'm not sure it will hold up now.

Hundreds of individuals may travel to away games if their club is based in London, Midlands, Manchester, etc ...

... but this is a club in the far NE whereby travelling alone, or in twos, isn't quite the same.

People in Sunderland who can purchase a ticket for Brighton away are more likely to go if there's a train/coach/whatever organised. That's helped us maintain our great away support at places like Bristol, Norwich, Cardiff, etc.

Relegation would have the club asking branches to help shift away allocations as they did in the Championship.

Have to agree, with this apparent new rule that the lead booker gets a hefty ban home and away and all tickets are cancelled how many branches and the people who use the coaches will have second thoughts and either sack it off or go in much smaller groups in a car?

Makes you wonder if this is the start of club organised away travel being a thing rather than individual branches....

OK, I'm gonna comment. If you're uber-mean, I'll go away

So I've had some away tickets from this guy over the years - perhaps 2 or 3 per season. Of course this is against the rules. I don't have a season ticket because it would be impossible for me to get to SoL on a regular basis, since it's 4h from my home. I did have a season ticket for a number of years - I had no children then and a company car with paid for petrol. I would happily pay a membership fee for 2nd dibs on away tickets after STHs, but no such scheme exists

The complaint is that a) there was (as far as I know) no warning, no "we're watching you, don't do it again" b) lots of people (like the guy above) who were entitled to tickets and only using this guy to do their admin have lost their Mags tickets c) THE TICKET OFFICE HAS ABSOLUTELY ALWAYS KNOWN THIS IS HAPPENING.

It's this guy's whole social life. He made no money out of it. He must be in a very dark place today

This stinks to high heaven, the lad has put lots of time and effort in and is no doubt financially worse off by doing all this.
The slogan "Till The End" has took a bit of a bashing recently but I can honestly say the club dont seem to be upholding their end of the bargain here !
Is it the end of being a caring community club and the start of chasing the dollar ??
We have been so good recently with public relations so for this to happen before playing that lot leaves a bitter taste for me.

Personally I think they should bring back the ability to apply without the required points and still awarded a point if unsuccessful but with an obligatIon to buy if tickets become available.
