Expected result...but Ferrari did Ferrari things and took themselves out of the race for the lead.

There was some fun in this though.
Same old, same old. They sure know how to stuff up a possible win.Ferrari need to fire their newest strategists

So what did we learn from that.

Ferrari are still rubbish at strategy (they so, so, so obviously should have pitted at least one of the cars under VSC it was painful).
Lewis is a lot happier with these cars.
They're rockets of the line.
Merc is much the quickest car in clear air.

But.

It's all a bit complicated with batteries/clipping/overtake boost etc.

Chandhok said something that I completely agree with recently - there should be three distinct categories of racing. Formula E is where the electric smarts should sit. Formula One should run ICE with sustainable fuel. Endurance racing use hybrids.

That makes so much more sense to me than all this fannying about. It looks like Mario Kart with the speed differentials now, and it's confusing for the viewer. Plus it's dangerous. There's going to be a big, nasty crash soon.

Well there's some merit to the rules, that was a pretty fun race. I would say some kind of battery graphic is sorely needed for us to have any idea what's going on.

I wonder if it's possible to implement a specific fix for qualifying. Would it be possible just to increase the fuel flow rate on Saturdays?

Such a shame we got the VSC when we did, the action between the front 4 was fantastic to be fair.

Mercedes clearly have the edge in clean air but Ferrari have stuck some good margin on McLaren and Red Bull too so actually their race pace looks pretty tidy themselves.

Mixed feelings on that. I enjoyed the race overall, although I can imagine it was more fun to watch than to drive. The first section of the race was quite interesting, whilst a lot of the passes felt cheap, but there did seem to a some wider strategy/evolution playing out. Then we moved into a phase where passing seemed more challenging, before moving into a phase where the passing dried up. There was definitely a lot of learning going on, but the rate of evolution is quite concerning, in that it might not be long before they arrive at the race fully optimised and a lot of the action dries up.

The first few laps looked interesting but thereafter it became a tad processional. Ferrari definitely should have gone for a split strategy. I was pleased for Lewis who seemed to be in a different mood for this season. Hope it lasts. Mclaren seem to have a lot of work to do. Verstappen showed his worth.
The first few laps were particularly entertaining.
Gutted for Piastri at his home GP.

I just watched the highlights and it was great at the beginning until the first VSC. Ferrari shooting themselves in the foot again. They should have split the strat to give themselves half a chance to control the race.
It was disappointing not to see any graphical overlays, like throttle, brake, battery etc that we saw in quali, although I do understand that the other teams would gain from that info.

I didn't hear any mention of the overtake mode at all. Did anyone actually harvest the extra 0.5Mj and then use it for the next lap?

Aston did better than I expected, well done to them for actually getting some laps on their PU's. Hopefully that should help them to understand things a bit better.

What happened to Piastri and Hulk at the start, no mentions of what happened in the highlights?

I enjoyed it, until Ferrari did their usual strategy **** up. It reminded me of the original turbo era, just switching managing the battery power for managing the fuel with turbo boost.

One thing that was mentioned during the race is that Mercedes were running a different PU to their customers, who won't get it until tomorrow.

In Piastri’s case he span into the wall on one of the reconnaissance laps. It seems like he got a huge torque spike while he was taking some kerb, so looked like a car issue rather than genuine driver error. Hulkenberg had a technical issue on then grid prior to the formation lap, and did not start.

That can’t be right can it, the rules dictate everyone has to get equally supplied?

The story seems to be that it is an equal PU, but that there's some shenanigans in the margins.

McLaren had to run with an outdated unit in testing and were handed the actual engine in AUS with no simulation data on the battery deployment.

So it's theoretically possible for them to get the same power as the works team, but they are way behind in their understanding

I agree with that. What about a simple green indicator for energy out of the battery and red for energy in. Or vice versa! ©
