Loved Hatton at his peak. Without a completely bent referee he might have got the better of Mayweather. Sounds like his various demons finally got the better of him. 46.
Undoubtedly the most popular British boxer of all time, 30,000 went to Las Vegas to cheer him on, his home bouts were must watch sell outs. Recently announced his comeback which was worrying in view of his history. A sad end, RIP...
Very sad news. A couple of years ago, I was watching an episode of (the original) Perry Mason and there to my surprise was a young Robert Redford. Apparently, it was his first speaking role on TV: it was an episode from 1960 when he was 23 RIP
Such an underrated actor in his earlier years due to his looks and movie star qualities his great work was somewhat overlooked IMHO. His range of work is phenomenal. The natural is one of my favourite sports movies of all time and the title sums him up. RIP.
Broadcaster John Stapleton, who had Parkinson’s disease complicated by pneumonia, has died aged 79. RIP
Sad to hear this, especially because I thought he'd died about 15 years ago. An absolute legend, who was admired by all. It says a lot that an umpire is up there as a stand out sporting personality of my youth.
RIP and a genuine character, and definitely even handed as an umpire. Not sure all bowlers appreciated him though, an instinctive not outer, perhaps understandable from a former opening batsman. Also anti technology in cricket, where (unlike VAR) I think it has played a really positive role. Perhaps football teams should get 3 referrals a match rather than every single potential incident being reviewed.
