And that's fair enough but it was a tiny part of the overall point, I just think people confuse realistic with negativity sometimes. It's like some want to forget the last 12 months happened and draw a line under it and forget it happened but I'm firmly of the camp of remembering it intently so not to repeat it. I understand it's a new manager and new system and its one game, that's fine but it's with 90-95% of the same players who let us all down severely last year and I'm not just going to forget that because we clutched a 2-1 win in the last 5 minutes after another poor overall performance (in my opinion). The last thing I want this season is to go back up, scraping wins to then just be embarrassed again next season because what is the point? Again some would call that negative, I just think it is realistic.

I'm still looking forward to the game tonight, I hope we play with a bit more purpose and a bit more confidence in the final 3rd as opposed to aimless crosses in the box for 90 minutes. I'm not looking to throw myself into the Itchen because of a loss but I'm also able to look at a win, enjoy it but also see the gaping issues that may arise later in the season if not addressed.
Fair enough, appreciate you giving the time for a proper response as well. I only watched the first half (on TV) and was then SkyGo'ing the game at the back of a wedding so I wasn't giving it quite so much attention. My feeling was we started well first 20 or so but then had a wobble after conceding before coming on strong against just before the break. I think game one is far too early to be reading so much into anything (and I'd feel the same for a great performance) but as LTL said, this stuff happens early season, especially with the window still open and lots of variables at play - as we've seen with Ipswich and Leicester too. I do agree that it wasn't a good performance on the whole, I just feel like we're extrapolating far too much on the basis of one game (where we were still the superior team and walked away with all of the points)

I'm interested to see the approach tonight too. Sounds like WS will take the cups more seriously than our past couple of managers, in the spirit of building momentum and winning energy. I do think the style of play will look more cohesive and knitted together once there's an actual creative midfielder on the pitch. At the minute, in lieu of opening teams up with sharp passing and little diagonal runs and overlaps in behind the opposition defence, we're resorting to crossing from deeper areas. Once we add quality in the final third and are able to play in the formation WS wants to play (the 4-2-3-1) I think it will look slicker and more efficient

I know you are a positive thinker No7 and that's fine too, it would be no good if it was all doom and gloom on here either. Room for both I think.
I just had a feeling that people were being discouraged from posting their (negative) thoughts.
I thought that if I didn't say something now, I would have to start feeling positive myself and that would lead to;

Unrealistic predictions
Being able to identify the players again
Being able to watch more than 10 minutes on a dodgy stream without thinking they (the opposition) are going to score soon
Happily checking the fixture list and league tables after a run of 5 defeats and with Pompey up next
Thinking we played great after losing to Pompey
Driving past the stadium without a deep sigh
Wondering if we should actually see a match sometime
Actually seeing a match sometime

And what will all that lead to? It will lead to me and Mrs G sitting somewhere in the Northam/Kingsland corner where we had seats 4 years ago, our shiny new season tickets in our hands. I will think back to this day, smile to myself and think " I'm so glad I listened to No7, I like the embryo of what I see too".

But that ain't going to happen. I've not spent the last 4 years persuading myself that "I don't really care that much anymore" to throw it all away over a happy clapper's pep talk. I'm in with the neg heads now and I'm happy with that.
War 'n' peace...... or your personal history lesson; above all a script from the heart ~ pauses, then sighs deeply
