Sunderland AFC is pleased to announce the appointment of Assistant Coach, James Brayne.
Moving to Wearside from Charlton Athletic, Brayne joins Régis Le Bris’ backroom staff ahead of the 2025-26 Premier League season to lead the first-team’s set-piece coaching.
He is the latest off-season addition to the team behind the team, following the summer arrivals of Assistant Head Coach Luciano Vulcano, Assistant Coach Isidre Ramón Madir, and Goalkeeping Coach Neil Cutler.
The set-piece specialist joined the Addicks 18 months ago and was part of the coaching set-up that led the South-East Londoners back to the Championship via the 2024-25 EFL Play-Offs.
Before his time at The Valley, Brayne enjoyed more than a decade with Birmingham City across two spells, which were split by three years with Manchester City.

Looks like another good addition to the coaching staff, exciting to see how much we have upgraded that this off season.
As @JHmackem has pointed out to me on twitter, Charlton last season scored the joint-third most set piece goals and conceded the third fewest in League One last season.
I reckon I could do the job of being our set piece coach.

Going off that they were joint third most scored at 21 and conceded the 3rd least at 10 in league 1. Quite good given the squad they had really.

I really hope that the Club finally play "Wisemen Say" all the way through on Saturday like at Wembley. It still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stick up ,when sung all the way, with pride and togetherness.
I've just spoke to a lad that does get stuff he's heard it's Welbeck, if true I'm happy with that alongside the options we have.
