Like Xhaka wouldn’t come to Sunderland?

It's a bit different. Xhaka wanting to return to the prem, last project before retirement or a Big pay contract in Saudi or mls

Diallo just starting his career , potential to be one one of the best players of his generation. If he wasn't at man u, the top English clubs (man c, Liverpool, etc ) would buy him

Yep. We could see Diallo back one day but there’s no chance of this summer.

Thought Anton was a walking bag of mistakes. Always looked far too relaxed and confident and it led him and us into the ****e far too often.

Couldn't stand him as a player. Thought the insane amount (at the time) we spent on him was terrible business.

No offence mate, but you arent half coming across as a bit obsessed with undermining Neil. Your view on his captaincy is well trodden. He wasn't a good choice of captain imo. You have been a regular doubter of him from a very early stage it seems to me. That is all fair. But here you are, digging him out as a poor captain, whilst at the same time hosting a thread about the next captain. Shouldn't we discuss the captaincy, we have a new PL season starting and the captain isn't being picked, or even considered, by the look of things.

The suggestion of Xhaka ruling the roost seems nonsense to me. I absolutely didn't say Xhaka was ruling the roost, you've totally misread that. He seems quite humble and discreet. But I have seen comments about Rigg being shy, Ballard being in awe, Luke looking awestruck. None of that looks real to me. Other people have made those comments, not just me. But I am not trying to forensically interrogate these things, I have no reason to do so, nor am I qualified to make such judgements.

Folk seem to be looking for things and seeing them. Xhaka is not the sort that would want the pedastal some are putting him on in my opinion. I'd say that's exactly the type of character he is, exactly what the club needs and why we bought him.

He isnt like a Keane character who would want it all about him. I disagree entirely. The keenness to link Dan Neil to Xhaka is bonkers. Unless we know Dan was willfully ignoring him, or he hasnt already said his hellos, or hasnt already been told he isnt captain etc etc all you are doing is guessing and making stuff up. I made it quite clear I was guessing which is why I asked other people for their opinion. Bringing up Hurley, a captain 60 odd years ago, is odd. By some media suggestion KLD promised Xhaka captaincy if he came, if true it seems naieve to think Dan should be fulfilling the role you seem to expect. I didn't say Xhaka was promised the captaincy, what the media say has nothing to do with me.

The bare reality is Neil seems likely to leave. He certainly doesnt seem to the first team at this stage. He hasnt been part of the so called starting 11. We appear to have moved on from him, or outgrown him. With everything in front of our noses expecting him to be doing what you expect seems plain daft to be honest. He's currently the captain, of the club, so I'm expecting him to fulfil that role until I'm told anything different. It would be daft to guess at what role he has, so it's you making the assumptions.

It is this sort of post that makes me hope he goes to be honest. We dont need to be so divided over players in the prem.

It's not a case of being divided, I have my opinion on the player in just the same way you do. I've not insulted him or derided him in any way but I do think I'm entitled to my opinion just as you are.

Seriously mate, I think it may be yourself who's a little obsessed with Dan Neil.

You've mentioned him more than I have and it clearly hits a nerve with you, I've never disrespected your opinion about Neil.

What have I done other than express my honest opinions on a chat forum, call me daft and obsessed but I think that's poor tbh.

Many other people have said much worse, than I have about Neil, yet you choose to highlight my comments ...

... I suspect that's because they ring true.

If no one else agrees I'll happily accept I'm in the wrong and that his contract situation is bothering me and no one else.

I haven't undermined him, this is just fifty people chatting on a forum, what we say makes no difference to any player ...

... if it does they need to get out of football before it affects them.

I respect the fans who have always championed Dan Neil, he is one of our own, so I get it. My opinion is, his ability and influence has always been overblown. I’ve never seen what other fans have seen with him.

On this forum alone, I’ve read folk compare him with Rodri and talk about him playing for Liverpool and England. I don’t think he’ll ever be anything more than a decent championship player. He’s too slow, he’s erratic anywhere in the final third (I know that’s not his game as a DM but some of our fans have said he’s the complete player) he’s not mobile enough, strong enough and is dispossessed far too easily in dangerous positions. He got away with it a lot in the Championship but in the premier league he’d cost us goals.

He has too many weaknesses to ever go ‘right to the top’ and nearly always goes missing in the big games. I think he’ll drop down to the Championship again but I’d like to see him move abroad where a slower pace to the game would suit his style more.

He turns 24 in a few months so he’s not a kid anymore and he’s at an age where he should really be looking to be playing first team football and it looks likely that isn’t going to happen here apart from maybe the odd cup game.

We don’t know what’s happening with his contract but he should either sign a new one pronto, if the club are trying to keep him here or we should sell him and get a decent fee while we still can, rather than let him walk away for nothing. If he leaves, it will be with everyone’s best wishes and we’ll always remember him playing his part in returning us to the top tier.
