Shame on those who liked this comment. We don't do amicable outcomes on here. We do insults, acrimony and revenge. Missed opportunity imo. Spurly and I would have rallied to his side due to Spurs loyalty. Could have been all-out war. Screenshots of PMs flying everywhere.
True, but quite a lot has changed since then. Two years of turning on the telly at supper/tea time, and seeing bodies being pulled out of the rubble, has an impact on public opinion
I agree the level of coverage and propaganda being gladly forwarded on by our most reputable news outlets has been unprecedented.
Anyway Netanyahu's response. Apart from the fact that I did quite well in the Benny Bingo, he's chatting ****. It's not a 'reward for terror' for a number reasons 1. Palestinians right to self determination is a fundamental right and has nothing to do with Oct 7th. This issue has been pertinent for decades 2. No mention whatsoever of the West Bank, where Israel are the occupying force. That has nothing to do with Gaza and nothing to do with Hamas 3. It is because of the behaviour of Netanyahu that the issue of Statehood has been accelerated. Levelling Gaza, killing innocent people, starving a population, demolishing huge areas in preparation for annexing Gaza for Jewish settlements. In short Ethnic cleansing has accelerated the need to recognise a Palestinian State.
I’m not disputing people including kids have died but the level of hysteria here is insane relative to what’s happening there. It has driven people mental.
Images of kids dying/starving kids is a very easy go to (and awfully sad) I remember there was that one image of that kid who died at a refugee crossing (was it greece?). That was the start of the huge let the refugees into europe years ago.
60,000 dead the vast majority of whom are women and kids? ... how 'realative' does it need to be? ... those numbers seem pretty extreme to most people ...
People care about what's happening though. And I know this subject comes up on here about 'why do people care so much about Palestine?' I think that is directly related to the fact that the British played a big part in dividing up the land without ever making an equitable settlement for the Palestinians, and ever since have seen the their own governments (I'm including the US) for decades, support the subjugation and repression of Palestinians. In short, for us Brits, it's just not Cricket. And old grannies will happily get dragged away by anti terrorism police to make that point.
I heard a reporter yesterday (I can't remember who) say in response to Netanyahu's claim that there 'Is no starvation in Gaza' 'Okay then, let journalists into Gaza and we'll show the world what's happening so they can make up their own mind about whether there is starvation or not'
I think this is part of the reason the need to recognise Palestinian statehood has been accelerated. Along with increasing amounts of Knesset approved Jewish settlements in the West Bank, there are plans afoot to annex and then settle parts of Gaza. This is a plan to push Palestinians out of their land and eventually claim it all as Jewish land for Israel. At a recent conference called 'Settlement brings security' 11 members of Netanyahu's cabinet and 15 additional members of the Knesset were in attendance to unveil plans to annex Gaza, build new Jewish towns and rename them in Hebrew. In addition to their attendance, Security minister Ben-Givr stated that - 'the Palestinians living in Gaza should "go away from here", which was backed up by Security minister Smotrich who said, "we need to find a legal way to voluntary emigrate" Palestinians, and clarifed by Shlomo Karhi Israeli Minister of Communications “We have an obligation to act… to [bring about] voluntary emigration — even if this war… turns this voluntary migration into a situation of ‘Coerce him until he says, "I want to do so"’” please log in to view this image please log in to view this image https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proposed_Israeli_resettlement_of_the_Gaza_Strip
Slightly ignores Hamas’ role in it all, both on October 7th, before it and since. The vast majority of people on marches at best sympathise with Hamas and wouldn’t dream of calling for them to do their bit on ending this and are completely blind to the crimes they continue to commit against their own people.
Let the journalists in which will apparently clear everything up. Nothing from the reporting over the last two years suggests that reporting will be in any way balanced and there’s far less demand for balance than giving Palestine-obsessed nutters what they want to hear. If people want to trust Jeremy Bowen poncing around Gaza that’s up to them.
Anyway, I do find it strange that people seem more emotional about what’s happening over there than the current problems we are facing on our own island. Probably been our countries downfall for a long while. We need to sort our own **** out here before we start sticking our noses in what’s happening abroad. Do I care more about the people of Gaza having their own homeland more than what the future of our country looks like for our kids growing up? Not a ****ing chance.
Absolutely. Some people only go on and on about what’s happening over there and barely mention, if ever, about the challenges ourselves and families face over here, though. Granted we aren’t going through a famine but we need to sort our own **** out, if which we have enough these days before we start pouring our hearts out about the challenges other people are facing.
