Yeah i agree. Another good year we get 50 million. For all the good he’s done and I like him, there feels like a narrative of ‘thanks what he’s given us’. It’s mutual and should remain so. I’m not convinced of it wasn’t him we wouldn’t have played hardball a bit more and my instincts tell me his dad like any agent maybe needed a rain check on who’s in charge.

It’s one of the things that’s slightly irking me. Even our own fans are saying ‘Doetmund will develop him well’. So do we, in fact we have. Even when off form we gave him space to develop. We need the Sunderland develop people narrative to be as loud as Dortmund’s in this story. We’re a premier league club.

 

How's it going to do that? His loan has finished and he's gone back to his parent club.If we want him,we're going to have to do a deal...and they'll know we like him,which might drive the price up.

 

I wonder if Middlesbrough are one of the ones interested - if he’s settled in the north east and we decide to look elsewhere.

For a 17 year old he was very good and his potential and scope for development was obvious.

 

Yep. 45 league appearances in his first season here, he was 17 then 18 in the September. What was that, something in the contract…?

 

The bit in bold is true but this is only the start of the club's journey. I would love the club to build players up to be seen as world class playing for us in the Prem but we all know that money talks and it talks loudest in this league. Personally speaking, I think Jobe is on a hiding to nothing no matter where he plays - his brother has made that surname stand out big style.

 

We have different opinions of what ‘very good’ is, then.

 

Good luck Jobe lad. Gave it all here and no one would doubt that. Players move, and that's it.

Missed when he was injured or suspended, and he'll be missed now he's gone. But, as someone said yesterday, four years ago Josh Showed was turning out for us in midfield! I'm sure they have been working on filling the gap.

 

I agree with him. He was very good for a 17 year old. He absolutley should not have started as many games as he did, because being very good for a 17 year old doesn't make you very good for a championship side.

That said - who's to say he's only developed as he has because he started so many games. We can't know what would have happened if he didn't.

So it all worked out for the best. Because for my money we've got promoted at exactly the right time. I think we can all say with hindsight that last year would have been too soon as Mayenda, Hume, Neil, Rigg etc weren't ready but might be now.

 

They are a champions league club so I’m not being naive, but we develop players well these days .

We have sent him back, what will that tell them?

 

I think there's an element of the type of football he's playing as well though.

If he stayed here he'd be developing more or less purely as a team that lack possession and are defending for their lives. Which is great. But long term if he aspires to the top he wants to develop and play in teams that dominate possession.

So I can see two reasons why Dortmund tick boxes we don't. 1) they offer him european football ; 2) they offer a more possession dominating style of play

 

Aye. It's a contradiction, but they are the best bet for him.
