I’m not sure they’ve played together enough to prove that. I know you’re not having a pop at O’Nien and the debate about him is tedious now with people entrenched in their views. However, RLB keeps playing him for a reason and he’s a very intelligent manager. I keep seeing the argument that a defenders job is to defend and therefore Mepham and Ballard are better. Maybe so but who is best for the team on balance with everything they all offer? O’Nien creates a lot of attacks for us because he can move forward with the ball, he identifies opportunities and his passing is excellent.. This is worth a massive amount to overall team performance.

I am not, 09 has done well many games. Made mistakes like others too. Just personally opinion, I think they are both better centre backs than him.

Aye. He has a bit of a reputation for it TBH. That , plus his injuries. Strange signing, at a 3 year deal too.
Can’t see him staying on for long, concern is where does he go? Could see him being loaned out for a few seasons, a gamble that doesn’t look like paying off

Away from our performance....Luton must be the worst side to visit the SOL in recent memory. We didn't have to get out 2nd/3rd gear...they had nothing, zero...nada to offer. They look like a side resigned to their fate. We did what we had to do..a professional performance led...again...by Dan Neil... the lad oozes quality

Somehow they were worse than the first half Plymouth performance, and look much worse than we did when we dropped.

These match threads are becoming like an on-line poll about O’Nien <laugh>

‘Poll closes at midnight tonight … Check the result to see if he plays against Leeds!’

Thankfully RLB gets the casting vote if it’s a tie. (Or even if it’s not a tie.)

Personally I’d say Ballard and Mepham are 10% better as defenders but O’Nien is 20% better at playing out, being available to receive the ball and finding the right long and short passes.

As we’re in a period when we need to be scoring RLB is making the right choice imo.

Spot on mate. Keeping possession is also preventing attacks and I’m not sure if there’s a better defender in the league at using the ball wisely.

Don’t for a second believe he has a rep for it as he simply wouldn’t be in the squad or playing

look at Ba and apuchicbe

Reminds me of our 17/18 side. A lot of quality in areas but just not arsed at all

Yes but are they both the best for the way we play if played together? That is far more important. Seemingly to every coach who has been here since onien moved to centre half.

you always hear “best defenders” from our fans about them, but I guarantee the way we play would suffer if they were both at centre half. We may end up like Burnley!

I personally think Mepham has been poor of late.i rate him, but his form has undoubtedly dipped.

That’s it for me

mepham and Ballard are our two best centre halves. But not our best pairing

A very decent famous Manager once said he picked the best team, not necessarily the best players. Which makes perfect sense to me

Probably agree with this. I also don't think o9's range of passing gets the credit it deserves. One of the passes down the line to Bellingham was absolutely superb. He's elite at this part of game. He complements the other two very well and clearly RLB sees the attributes as being key to how we play

I agree O9 plays because he can pass a ball and run through midfield with ease and set up fast counters. He has a midfielders view and is comfortable on the ball . He isn't a natural C/H we all know that but he also isn't a bad one ..I would like to see him in the middle of a back3
