There is a town near Michigan, US, that is now run by Islamists along the lines of Sharia. Sectarian politics. Women's rights are being suppressed, ritual sacrifice of live animals is legal in all homes and some trappings of LGBTQ (rainbow stuff) is illegal. In recent Gaza marches, there have been chants of "Death to America". The irony is that immigration to the US from Islamic countries has been insisted on by liberals, yet they are introducing to the country the most far right individuals in the world. Probably less so in the UK, perhaps because they're on a tighter rein. Nothing I've said on the above means that we don't have some decent Muslims in the UK who integrate well with Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Sikh, Buddhists alike.
Presumably you mean Hamtramck, which is in Michigan (rather than ‘near’ it). It’s a small town (28,000) in the economically depressed area of Detroit. The population is majority Islamic, so it no surprise that the city council is made up of Muslims. While there is no evidence of sharia law being imposed (please share if you have it, I have googled already) the socially conservative Islamic values, not wildly too different to socially conservative Christians, seem to hold sway. Of course, to progressive social liberals like me this stinks, as does any ‘moral’ code imposed by a medieval ideology (or any other ideology for that matter). But that’s representative democracy for you.
I was listening on the radio, and I don't recall whether it was Hamtramck or Dearborn. I guess that's the problem with liberalism. Something like radical Islam looks as though it could raise its ugly head as it did with ISIS, as it has in Iran, and the Muslim population increasing in the UK every day, the liberals shrug and say, nothing to see here, wait until there's a crisis. Then there those that take a more cautious, I'd say, prudent line, and head off the problem before it becomes insoluble
Restrict legal immigration from certain countries, would be a start. Take all available steps to encourage integration of all UK communities. Take a much harder line on radical imams and deport them. Resist sectarian parties in Parliament. I'm sure greater political minds than mine would have other ideas.
