Since they are obviously unable to read, bearing in mind the WARNING signs they have ignored, it would be pointless.

I don't expect that Seawater does any good to cars, so their idiocy MIGHT just be brought home to them when the rapair bills come in.

I see that they are considering how to stop this sort of stupidity.
A barrier, rather like those used on Level Crossing's MIGHT work, but sometimes the stupid amongst us can be quite deviously clever, when they are in the mood

A good idea, but I would add, ' Fine To Be Paid by Next of Kin, Before any Bodies Recovered Are Released'.

From memory I think it's about £2000 for a rescue by boat and £4/5000 by air.

There's also the cost of recovering the car and some breakdown providers don't cover you.

Then there's the question of whether your insurance company pays for the write off which it always is. You'll at least lose your no claims bonus as you can't claim it was anyone's fault but your own.

This comes down to one thing and one thing only....some people are as thick as mince.
It happens over here on Morecambe Bay and the quicksands despite the hundreds of signs...some people just know better and don't like being told.

Pisses me off when I see stuff like this, and it does seem like it's a regular occurance.

The RNLI are an invaluable service, and they do what they do, no questions asked....many times putting their own lives in danger.

Holy Island causeway, there should be some kind of charge/levy paid to the RNLI if you need rescued by them through stupidity rather than an accident.
If its an accident or a breakdown, fair enough....but then you're not trying to race a tide, so could call for help/assistance well before there was a danger to life.

A car might be lost, but if its by a genuine breakdown/accident the insurance would cover it, and would be replaced.

A life can't be.

We did the St Cuthberts Walk, from Melrose to Lindisfarne, a couple of years back. We arrived at the causeway as the tide was almost out intending to cross the sands on the 'Monks Path' that used to be the only way across. (It's marked with sticks in the sand as you'll probably know.)

We hadn't realised the sand is still too saturated to walk on, as the water recedes, so we went to the end of the causeway. Before the tide had fully gone out the Range Rover, at the front of the queue, set off sending plumes of water into the air, looked great.

Halfway across he ground to a halt and blocked the road in both ways so other drivers had to push it to the side ...

... as we walked past we waved and cheered but, for some reason, he turned his head away and ignored us <laugh>

i learned as a child 'what's that white box there for' and that a causeway only works at low tide, so many years on and people still get themselves stuck.

it is not hard to find out the crossing times with the ability most have with the mobile phones (when they stop taking fish-lip pictures and dinner photos)...i honestly believe a charge for thier rescue and recovery of the car might help but even then, there are always the 'experts' who know better.

a sledge hammer might be the answer......or let them stay in the refuge 's until the tide goes back out then charge those idiots for the recovery.

The man and woman alerted the coastguard who advised them to make their way to a refuge box while help was sent.'

Should hoy a flask of Nescafe ( nee point in wasting any good stuff), and a few crusts at them for the duration. Then charge them very heavily afterwards.

The pair had made their way to a refuge box before a crew arrived

Two French tourists had to be rescued after getting stuck in the rising tide at Holy Island Causeway.

Seahouses lifeboat station crews were called to rescue the pair from a refuge box after their car was cut off just before 16:00 BST on Wednesday.

The RNLI said the tourists may have "failed to appreciate or understand the warning notices".
