A word of caution. He's 19, unfinished, and a LOT of the defenders he'll be coming up against will be as big, if not bigger, than he is. Not bullying kids anymore.

This. A lot of people getting excited by this lad and I definitely understand why, but he's not going to be competing/ousting/replacing Stewart in August and unlikely to be scoring 15 goals in the Championship next season.

He's barely got a kick in the Benfica B side (who play at a lower standard than us) and when he has, he's not exactly free scoring. He's been excellent at youth level but is completely unproven beyond that.

Having said that, the same would have been said of Alese and Ekwah and they soon settled in. I trust the recruitment, fans just need to be patient, it might take 18 months before we see this lad adapting to our level.

Just noticed the Echo reporting both now. Whilst they rarely have their own scoops, they don't normally just copy others without validating sources themselves.

Triantis is an interesting signing. He appears to have the raw ingredients to make a good defender and he'll have the luxury next season of sitting behind Ballard, Batth, Alese anbd O'Nien with the addition of Bailey Wright to help him settle in. He can come over and find his feet without needing to instantly perform.

im excited about what he can be in 12 months, not 12 days / weeks

That's exactly the right way to approach all of our signings these days (other than the older free signings). I'm just worried that expectations for next season are a little too high. It's great to be aiming for promotion, but if we're 10th half way through the season and this lad is looking like Lihadji did last season, we still need to be patient as a fanbase.

Im watching the match too and despite making a poor decision hes had a solid game.
Hes a young lad that needs lots of Coaching to become the player he has the potential to be though, he'll probably spend a while in the U23s with Anderson to get him up to scratch.
Hes being Coached by PE teachers at the moment, i wouldn't judge him by watching him for 45 minutes on tv. He'll be starting preseason with us learning from professional coaches and being mentored from Danny Batth

couldnt agree more. I fear that what was essentially over performance last year will create unrealistic expectation this year. Playoffs again would still represent a great year. Target always has to be promotion but doesn’t mean lower is bad

I genuinely think there will be 12 or so sides in top half, all of whom could win it or come 12th

Kristjaan Speakman has been very thankful to Carl Winchester who has departed from Wearside after his contract expired. Speakman only had positive words for Carl, who helped us gain promotion from League One.

END OF SEASON DUTIES

“We get to sign players, talk about the positive part of the season but also there are some more difficult conversations.”

TOP GUY

“Carl is an absolutely top guy and I think over the last two and a half years since I’ve been at the football club we’ve relied on certain individuals coming into the football club and really embracing what it’s about and driving it forward, and Carl is one of them.”

THANK YOU

“I’ve had some really good conversations with him over the last month around what his future looks like, not just that but also I think sometimes missing out a big thank you to him. He’s really embraced Sunderland on and off the pitch.”

ADAPTED TO WHAT WE NEEDED

“I think when you consider the fact that he came as a centre midfield player by trade but executed the right-back position really for a full season to a really, really high level that obviously got us to the Championship. I think he understands how highly we respect him.”

Top lad Winnie. If he is ever back at the SoL he will get a round of applause from me.

Aye if he was already the complete package with no issues he'd be signing for Man City not us. The report on him mentioned his positional sense was a weakness but like you say plenty of time to work on that.

Another exciting signing.

Yeah training with better quality players and learning from proper Coaches and not ex Australian A-League footballers will bring him on leaps and bounds.
