Ivan Toney suspended for eight months and fined £50,000 for breaching the FA's betting rules. 8 months!
The Bees fans outraged on social media, I don't feel particularly sorry for them. Seems he's been very silly. Am I just being heartless?
Divided opinion on here. I was in two minds as to whether or not it was harsh, then I read the rules regarding players betting in a sky sports article (https://www.skysports.com/football/...or-eight-months-for-breaching-betting-rules); "What are the rules on betting in football? Betting on football is banned worldwide for all players, managers, coaches, club staff, directors and licensed agents involved in the game within the Premier League, EFL, National League, Women's Super League, Women's Championship and the Northern, Southern and Isthmian leagues. Participants covered by the ban are prohibited from betting, either directly or indirectly, on any football match or competition that takes place anywhere in the world." That is pretty clear. Then, if I'm going to be generous, maybe it was a one off or occasional mistake he made...from the same article; "Toney, 27, was charged with 262 breaches of FA rule E8 between February 25, 2017, and January 23, 2021. The FA subsequently withdrew 30 of these breaches and he admitted to the remaining 232." 232 in four years is 58 a year, so just over once a week. He broke the, very clear, rules, once a week for four years. I feel a little less sorry for him now.
Maybe too harsh then, and should be a shorter ban...but if they are seen to be being too lenient that sends a bad message too. Sadly no winners in this situation.
Rules are pretty clear, don’t bet on football if you are a professional footballer. Plenty of other things to bet on.
3 months of the ban covers the summer when he wouldn't be playing anyway, so effectively a 5 month ban..........
2-4 years before the Premier League case against Manchester City is completed and they are exonerated/punished. Plenty of time to buy a few more trophies then, tally ho! Matt Dickinson of the Times reckons this City team rank alongside the Ajax team Cruyff played in and the AC Milan team Arrigo Sacchi managed. May be on the pitch but the stench of corruption that surrounds them mean they will always be tainted for me, no matter how brilliantly they play.
