Aforementioned first hit for Motown... Incredible list of songs he wrote and produced - "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" by both Marvin Gaye and Gladys Knight & the Pips; "War" by Edwin Starr; "Wherever I Lay My Hat (That's My Home)" by Paul Young; "Smiling Faces Sometimes" by the Undisputed Truth; and the long line of "psychedelic soul" records by the Temptations, including "Cloud Nine", "I Can't Get Next to You", "Psychedelic Shack", "Ball of Confusion (That's What the World Is Today)", and "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone", amongst others.
He was credited as a writer on that first hit but Berry Gordy said it was a clerical error. You can be pretty sure he didn’t get writers royalties. Did you see the documentary on Motown in Britain and how it got the name (which was never used in America). A good watch. The bloke who came up with it and formed the first Motown fan club in this country was well treated by Berry Gordy and flown over to Detroit and met many of the stars who kept in touch with him for years.
