Very sad, a man in Florida believed the virus was a hoax has now lost his wife to covid 19..........why can’t people take this threat seriously?

At the gig. a lot of the material came from Alexei's "imaginary sandwich bar" comedy programme. He was clearly disappointed by Labour's performance in the general election and , despite the humour, there was a large element of underlying truth about his observations. I thought that it would have been interesting to know how many people in the packed audience shared his political views. I always get the impression that Winchester is essentially pretty "liberal" and was surprised that the gig was sold out. I did have anther ticket to see Clive Anderson several weeks later but this became the first casualty of the Covid crisis for me.

I never went to the Theatre Royal much until the 2010s. Back in the 1990s, I went to the odd jazz gig and have been to a number of the concerts put on by Winchester Jazz Festival in the last few years. However, I have found that they increasingly put on some very interesting productions as well as stuff I have taken my niece and nephew to see. Back in January they instigated a monthly jazz programme in the foyer and I had attended the first of these. I think they only managed to put three gigs on and I missed the other two due to work commitments. Personally, I like to listen to live gigs (mainly jazz and classical) as well as the odd Shakespeare play which I find myself appreciating more as i get older. As well as the football and cricket, it is nice to get involved in cultural events whether it is the arts or historical / archaeological lectures. It is shocking how much has been cancelled this year. This is what I go to work to earn money for. I find it difficult to accept that so much has been wiped out this year. I usually see something at least one a month over the course of a year although September is usually so hectic that all the weekends tend to involve something else on top of the sport as there is the Winchester Jazz Festival and Hampshire Cultural Weekends in the same month. November is almost as hectic as I have to balance two football teams, the BBC History magazine weekend and the archaeological lectures in the Guildhall.

The theatre is now struggling and last week they announced that the 2020 pantomine will be shelved. There is currently an appeal to keep the Theatre Royal afloat although I think, like many places, the cultural life in the city has been squeezed out well beyond the theatre. I think gigs in the Railway Inn have only just restarted albeit with massive restrictions. The amazing thing for me was that it took so long for many gigs to be formally cancelled back in the spring whereas the cancellations are now reaching far further forward than they were back in March. It feels like many places have given up the ghost already. The gigs at Turner Sims remain unfulfilled as far as the jazz is concerned and I have not seen any publicity for anything for The Anvil in Basingstoke which is also a frequent destination for me. (The website mentioned that everything is being re-scheduled) I am not expecting to see anything there in 2020 and the news over the course of the weekend is suggestive that this will be the case until about June next year. I fear there will be dire consequences for cultural life in Hampshire.

I had no idea of the theatre in Hedge End but will look out for that I would love to hear Mark Steele record one of his programmes.

Because a significant number of people believe any nonsense spouted by randoms rather than believe scientists and doctors.

Life isn’t as complicated as conspiracy theorists make out....crap happens because crap happens...no one is planning it.

^^^^ This is exactly what I say to Mrs No7's 'mate' (you know the one who dispute the world may be round and Coronavirus is just so the govt can put up 5g masts to zap us)

Her answer is "oh No7 you may be clever, but you are so naive".........

The ones who get my goat (because they are a threat to others not just themselves*) are antivaxers....they obviously believe that our current freedom from polio, diphtheria, smallpox etc is due to luck not vaccination.

*If they were only a threat to themselves (and obviously their offspring) it would merely be evolution in action.

With humour, there are certain things you can say amongst certain people.

Amongst my close friends, my humour is DARK. Nothing is off limits - genuinely.

But like it or not, this is a public forum, and you have to consider what you say in such places. Certain things, in certain frames become not OK.

It's part of the problem with the internet, actually. A joke between a few people can blow up, go viral and be taken out of context by thousands of others.

Personally, I am not offended by most things. However, I think this forum should be accessed by all backgrounds to discuss saints, and we should look to act in ways which are inclusive and welcoming... Despite the occasional hissy fits

In private nothing is off limits? Isn’t that a major issue movements like BLM have? Now I’m not suggesting your making racist jokes, but you’ve kind of implied they may happen, as nothing is off limits, buts that’s ok in as private forum, but never a public one...

I do get the other parts of your post, about stuff going all Covid and stuff.

Just maybe you want to consider how you wrote the first line as it really can be interpreted perhaps in ways you didn’t mean

How on earth do you know - he said his humour is dark, and nothing is off limits - and this was in response to saying things in public versus private, which was in response to things being said about jokes of certain content.

So, to me, it is believable - that ok with you if I see things different to you, or that you maybe just didn't follow something far enough back?

No you said he implied racist jokes may happen in private. Since when was " dark jokes" defined as racist? It could be any kind of humour. The fact you've now flipped it and played the racist card is the biggest joke. Why should racism even come into the conversation. Moron.

No need for personal insults SS. He’s entitled to express his opinion just as you are, as long as it doesn’t get personal.

In fairness he said that genuinely nothing was off limits. Not exactly crazy to believe that could potentially include jokes of that nature.

Youre kind of making my point for me - that people interpret things in different ways - the as nothing is off limits could imply loads of stuff, that in context the the recent posts on here, are relevant in my opinion.

So, not just the racist bandwagon - I could have said misogynistic jokes, jokes about Jews - the point is Os was implying they he could say anything in private, but not in public, which is kind of the point that is wrong, in my opinion.
