You could also try soaking the wood in water and then putting it on the grill like you did.
Well lighting the wood and getting the smoke going 1st worked a treat, chicken was smokey all the way to the bone which it just wasn't yesterday.

Ever had a garden fire and burned freshly cut wood? That's green wood and it gets very smokey very quickly.
