The best way to deal with a protest is to try and contain and let it die out naturally, eventually people have to get their asses back to work, or just get tired of it all. The cops have gone on the attack, brutally, so its escalating and escalating.
Every single time the government of a country has tried to beat down a protest they've mostly lost... except for Bashar Al-Assad apparently.

Spot on. He needs them votes. If he was just relying on the backwater gun-toting redneck vote he'd never have got into power in the first place. He needs the bible belt, the middle america republicans.
Right now a lot of white christians in the burbs are worried whether their homes, shopping malls and flash 4 by 4's are going to be next. If things go tits up, he knows they'll turn their back on him. The photo op didn't come after the tear gas. The tear gas and moving the protesters was part of the photo op. That and holding up a bible is symbolic like he's leading a crusade. He's drawing the battle lines for middle amercia... or trying to.

Those states would have voted for him anyway. As will the states that vote for a Democrat will do also.
The states where it's usually a close race, there are a few, I don't know which they are, will probably all vote Democrat after this.
That's how he's going to lose it.
