This evening - Friday 29th - BBC4 @ 10:30 - Classic Albums - "The Chirping Crickets". Enormous influence on what pop music was to become.
(NB. Neil Young & Crazy Horse not mentioned once - despite BH's impact :emoticon-0100-smile).

So I know I'm way behind the times with the telly and film and that, but I've been binge watching the Afterlife.

Ricky Gervais is a ****ing genius. I know people don't like him, but why is that?

Is it because he's so good at what he does?

I don't get what people dislike, that's all.

It's fashionable to knock talent these days - it's tinged with a heavy dose of jealousy.
We can both ignore the bad vibes and keep demonstrating superiority.
Plebs the lot of 'em. In common parlance - know nowts.

Because a lot of his humour invites us to laugh at people who, in other situations, would be pitied. Compare to the typical Brit humour of taking the piss out of people who have more power than you, or slapstick, or witty play on words. Kind of laughing down vs laughing up. It’s uncomfortable and that’s why many people (me included) don’t like his stuff.

I don’t see that at all.
From what I see he humanises some people who might be laughed down upon so you end with more empathy for those same people in real life (The sex worker’ in After Life for example)
The series he had most criticism for was Derek, but personally I thought that it was superb and made that character thoroughly lovable.
In fact I don’t see any of his work as laughing down at all.
Live he is very good too IMHO.

Different strokes and all that I suppose

Change of pace !!!

Most of you, if not all, will be familiar with the Damn Busters story from WW2.

Tonight (Sat May 30 '20) @ 7 p.m. on BBC TV CHANNEL 2 is a very well done documentary (first aired in 2011) covering the subject.

Title: "Timewatch: Dam Busters: The Race to Smash the German Dams."

Available on BBC iPlayer for the next month if you missed it & are interested.

Well worth viewing in my opinion.

"Andrew Marr's History of Modern Britain".
I know most of you will have watched the series on Beeb4 (circa 2007)before :emoticon-0105-wink::emoticon-0105-wink:.
'Tis being repeated at the moment (episode 4 of 5 at 8 pm tonight).
Give it a go, excellent doc. Beats EastEnders :emoticon-0105-wink:
