I knew you would take this thread in a certain direction <doh>

On a serious note, his wife must have known for years. He’s been living a lie in part out of commercial reasons. When he started off on Blue Peter this would have been a career killer. Wrongly, but those were the times.

I don't think Schofield was on Blue Peter. You may be thinking of Going Live!.

'Living a lie' was something most gay people chose to do in the past, rather than have their real sexuality common knowledge, in an age when being gay was widely regarded as a perversion, a sickness, anti-social, and was actually a criminal offence.
Gay folk were accused of all kinds of things, including being more likely to molest minors than straight people were.
And we all remember the gangs of 'queer bashers' who would beat half to death anyone they thought was gay, while the Police looked the other way.
    It wasn't that long ago.
No wonder most of them preferred to remain anonymous.

There are still large parts of the world where being Gay will get you years in a prison cell, total rejection by your community and even your family, or a death sentence. More often than not, these parts of the world are the same ones where old men can legally marry very young brides.

According to Joan Collins everyone in showbiz knew he was gay, so why did he need to come ahrt?

Presumably because a Sunday newspaper was about to 'out' him with a front page exclusive.
A slow news weekend I guess (or rather a slow weekend for news with 'sex' content. Corona virus stories have no sex appeal).
As if revealing Philip Schofield's sexuality is in the public interest.

No coincidence that a lot of these stories break a day or two before Sunday.

I caught a front page headline on sunday about this. Honsetly, if I was on my way to buy a newspaper and this was the frot page, I wouldn't part with my money. Is it even a story? Man admits he's gay? Wow, how on earth did that happen?

It's strange. It was front page news, even in the Grauniad. I hardly knew who he was, let alone what his sexual orientation is.

Is your life richer now you know? It just feels like the ongoing reality TV/delve into the private lives of micro-personalities stuff that so many people seem to think is a good substitute for actually living. I wasn't at the City ground last night, but that win made me supremely happy. Stuff like the Schofield story make me wonder whether a lot of people out there need some sort of stimulus in their lives.

It seems that Dil got the respect from the Trent End yesterday after they gave it large to Dil with some rather ripe insults and he gave it back with spades... they respected the fact that he didn't complain but instead gave as good as he got :)

The papers like to set the news agenda, and tell us what we're interested in, even when we're not.
