    Williams extends City stay
    Monday, November 4th 2019

Wales international defender Ashley Williams has extended his stay at City until the end of the season.

Williams arrived as a free agent in August and since become a regular in the heart of defence, making nine appearances to date as City push at the top end of the Sky Bet Championship.

He originally signed until mid-January but is now set to stay until May with City Head Coach Lee Johnson saying: “Ashley has made an important contribution both as a player and a mentor to the younger players in the side given his knowledge and experience.

"It was an initial short-term contract to see whether it was right for Ashley and ourselves, which it certainly has been, and I am pleased that he is with us until the end of the season.”

Williams said: "I’ve been happy with how it [City career] has started, for us as a team and a club. For me, I’ve stayed in the team and I think I’ve done reasonably well. I can still play better, I’m learning all the time, trying my best and we’ve had a good start. It’s not been all ups but we’ll take the start we’ve had on the whole, definitely.

"The best thing for me has been the games, the lads, everything really! I’m really enjoying my time here, it’s nice to be in the city and the lads are great. The coaching staff are good, the fans treat me well and for me this has been a start I could not have imagined. I’m happy to be here, I enjoy coming to work every day. For me, there have been lots of good elements at the minute."

Williams’ career began at Stockport County before he helped Swansea reach the second tier via the 2007/08 League One play-offs. An instant hit in South Wales, Williams made the move permanent for a then club-record fee.

After eight seasons with the Swans which included top-flight football after their 2010/11 promotion, Williams linked up with Everton for three seasons, before signing with the Potters on loan for the 2018/19 campaign.

Williams has been twice named in the PFA Championship Team of the Year (2009/10, 2010/11) and won the League Cup with Swansea in 2012/13 following his Championship play-offs win to reach the Premier League in 2010/11.

    Ashley Williams: 2019/20 in numbers
    • Games: 9
    • Goals: 1
    • Assists: 1
    • Clean sheets: 2
    • Average passes per game: 52
    • Pass success rate: 72%
    • Most interceptions: 4 (Swansea City H)
    • Most clearances: 7 (Swansea City H, Reading H, Brentford A, Barnsley A)

Good news and it grants us some breathing space in defence.

He's a lot better than Bailey Wright, so I agree. I can see Wright, or maybe even Baker leaving at some point in 2020.

Wright was brought to AG as Flint's replacement, given the 5shirt and club captaincy.
The only way he got in the side in the end was to play RB due to an injury.
I did say at the time fair play for filling in, but honestly he is/was a terrible signing to replace Flint.
Baker is far better than Wright but just seems injury prone.
