Last time out Sunderland beat Wimbledon and Burnley drew at Wolves.
Sunderland travel to Turf Moor on Wednesday to take on Burnley in the second round of the Carabao Cup.
The Black Cats head into the match in confident mood having won their last four matches in all competitions, but they know that they will have to be at their best to carry that winning run on.
Sunderland will be without Ethan Robson, Duncan Watmore and possibly Marc McNulty through injury, but new signing Joel Lynch could travel with the squad.
Duncan Watmore returned to training last week and was all set to figure in the Black Cats' second round tie at Turf Moor, but following today's training session at the Academy of Light the 25-year-old has pulled out of the game.
Watmore will miss out but Ross intends to rotate his squad tomorrow having made it clear last week that Saturday's League One game at Peterborough United takes precedence.
Sunderland likely XI: Burge, McLaughlin, Baldwin, Flanagan, Hume, Dobson, McGeouch, O'Nien, Embleton, Grigg, Kimpioka.

Burnley will be without Belgium international midfielder Steven Defour, but Danny Drinkwater and Robbie Brady are likely to be available after minor injuries. Dyche is likely to rest a number of key players for the game.
Burnley likely XI: Hart; Bardsley, Gibson, Mee, Taylor; Lennon, Hendrick, Drinkwater, Brady; Rodriguez, Vydra

The draw for the third draw will take place on Wednesday, August 28th following the conclusion of Lincoln City’s clash with Everton at around 9.45pm. Note that the draw could be made nearer 10pm if the match goes to penalties.

Betting:
Burnley 8/15 Sunderland 6/1 Draw 13/4

My 2 pence:
After 4 straight wins it would be good to play a strong team and give it a go. However, I think there will be lots of changes from Saturday's team and this game will take second place to the trip to Peterborough.

My guess is
1-1 and we lose on penalties.

Anyone in the team on Saturday should be rested. Don’t want any injuries to first team starters in a cup tie which, let’s face it, most of us don’t really care about.

I hope for a good performance, I care less so about the result. Treat it like a pre season friendly

I was a big advocate for going for the cup last season so we could win something in our lifetime, however ****e that cup is, but the stakes are much bigger now and we need to go up this season for the long term health of the club so play the kids and see how they do. It'll be a great experience for them.

I'm fully prepared for a thorough spanking from Burnley so anything better would be a pleasant surprise.

Edit: btw I think Ross will play a full strength side it seems to be how he rolls

Personally think we will lose tomorrow so I would play fringe players and youngsters for experience and fitness. Really want to keep the majority of the first team fresh, hungry and undefeated for promotion.

I quite understand how many supporters wanted to win the tinpot cup and enjoy a day out at Wembley... what I find difficult is that Donald and Ross got swept up in all that...so when fixture congestion results and the small 1st team squad had injuries we fell at the final hurdle..I hope they have learnt the lessons

You are right mate they shouldn't have tried as hard as they did to win it, there was damage done as a result and we only lost out on promotion by a hair so it probably would have swung it if we'd gone out early.

I stand by the principle that if you aren't trying to win something, anything, then what is the point but this season isn't the time for that we just need to go up and screw the cups.

Doubt if Lynch will be match fit if he is give him 45 minutes. Wyke is out for 2 months according to Echo sources.
