The last truly good and original Saints song was Matt Letiss/ takes the piss one. Rickie's was clever but was based on the Scouser's Fernando Torres song but adapted perfectly to our situation in League One. Everything now seems to be from a pool of the same half a dozen tunes but with different words ie Seven Nation Army, Sloop John B etc
Yes, I can appreciate the self-deprecating or situational chants that you get every now and then, just the... bread and butter ones aren't brilliant IMO. An interesting post. I guess you have to foster that spirit somehow and I feel like it is possible to feel strongly about a team that hasn't existed for a while. Heck, I got pretty into supporting the Birmingham Iron when the AFL was a thing, and I picked them by virtue of having lived in Birmingham UK. People can be weird and get really into things, really quickly if such things are promoted and plugged widely. Like the house system that's just been introduced at my school. Some people do seem to have really bought into it. And maybe I'm weird because I care very much for the Minnesota Vikings despite the nearest I've ever been to Minnesota is Cleveland airport when I changed planes back in 2008.
Seriously. The thread has been going 6 hours and nobody mentioned this masterpiece of originality and quality: “He’s got a new bike He’s got a new bike Virgil can’t dijk He’s got a new bike” It was brilliant, but the prick fecked off, so probably why nobody has mentioned it.
You can be quite gullible sometimes Jasp!... The Soton Civic Centre chimes/tune is an 18th Century Hymn from a famous Sotonian, Issac Watts I believe.
Thing is though, if you take away the sh*t chants, you're gonna lose 80/90% of the atmosphere. Fans can't be expected to think of an original, witty chant for every game. Maybe two or three new chants per season is okay. But you would still have to mix them up with all the old ones.
Ah fair, didn't realise that. Thought they only sang the other one which we (dreadfully) attempted to copy.
But they gave it their own style by slowing it down. And didn´t Manchester United steal their "Glory, Glory" one.?
Liverpool and Manchester City fans might contest that. City´s Kolo and Yaya Toure chant spring to mind. And Liverpool´s "Virgil" song.
I seem to remember an original chant at the dell years ago..........."Let's not shout or Parley........Get it up the middle for Charlie".........(Meaning Charlie Wayman I think). or similar.....,,,,anyone else remember that??
