Problem with paying him £180k is that'd have a knock-on effect and could lead to a similar situation like Arsenal have with Ozil. Whatever we'd pay Toby, Vertonghen would deserve at least £20k-£30k more. While the rest of the defence would also want parity or sizeable increases (except those at RB, they should be ****ing paying us to play for Tottenham).

well you didn't want players being called up by Southgate its just Trippier took extreme measures to achieve that result .<laugh>

180k per week is just under £9.5m per year so would be around £38m over 4 years for a player who is 30 ish and has several muscle injuries in the past 18 months so maybe that's part of the thinking. Personally I hope he stays and leaves on a free next summer as both Sanchez and Foyth would benefit from another season with him.

Yeah agree, I'd rather that too. Foyth is still a solid season or two away from being truly ready whilst Sanchez can definitely take over as first choice next season if need be but I'd rather have the choice of Vertonghen/ Toby/ Sanchez plus Foyth for one more year. We'll probably lose Vertonghen the following summer as well, think he'll return to Ajax to finish his career.
