It wouldn't have in most City centres back then. Lived in Leeds in the 60s and Hull city centre was a lot livelier on a night than Leeds back then. But Leeds has moved on and Hull hasn't. Some decent pubs in Hull but not in the centre where there are no late night pubs that anyone over 30 would wish to be in or anywhere to get a decent meal after 9pm.

I don't think there is actually a "minus" offer. I think it was like above. Made 5k, took 1k option, so -4k
Have you ever watched the Chase, Frank? Seat four almost always gets a minus offer. The guy today, even though he won 5 grand he added a grand to the final total - bcc took money away from the final total.
Wifey likes it, so seen it about 50 times and never seen a minus offer. Not seen it recently though so could be they introduced it a bit later on?

Yep, they regularly get a minus offer, but generally only ginger blokes with small gonads ever take it.

Wasn't closing time technically 10:30 p.m (by law) from the start of WWI up until the late '80 s ? Most landlords (and coppers doing the rounds) took a blind eye to punters taking up to 11:00 pm to drink up their beer etc so long as it had been purchased no later than 10:30 - if I recall. I lived in Leeds too in the 60's and even the clubs had to follow the same licensing laws re "last-orders please" cut-off times.
(There were lots of places that got away with serial "bending the law" mind.)
I think technically you had 20 minutes drinking up time. 10pm shutting on a Sunday. There was a stage in .Hull for a while in the 80s where coppers would aggressively march into pubs in the city centre and take drinks off people. The fact they had black vans outside suggested they knew it was provocative and would kick off.
We were lucky in Brid when I started drinking in the 1960s. Seaside resorts got half an hour extra on a Friday and Saturday in the summer. Again, when they relaxed opening hours only seaside resorts could open up on a Sunday afternoon for a while.
Only pubs I liked in Leeds city centre were Whitelock's and the Peel. Though my favourite was Welcomb Inn in Tinshill.
When we drank downtown Leeds,which wasn't often, we always went to Whitelock's - charming old place. Still pop in there for one when I'm back over there. Hardly recognize the city centre any more.
Mostly drank in The Original Oak or The Skyrack in Headingley at night, or The Eldon or The Packhorse on Woodhouse Lane during lunch break. Sat nights were mainly in the Student Union bar to attend the great bands that played there. Great times.
Last time I was in Skyrack a bouncer came over to me and someone else and said
‘ Is the grey haired old bloke outside with you?’
‘Yes...what’s he done now?!’
‘Nothing really...he’s just so incredibly pissed I can’t let him back in!’
